Problem with my Husky 610?

stan

i have $170 dollars in rolled quarters if you want to trade them for the bike. i won't even deduct a removal fee from that to haul this POS away :twofinger

i have a compression tester that might work, have to retrieve it from the parental unit dwelling though.

Bryan, I dunno, I think my mind is warped thinking about that husky for the few days, but those quarters are starting to look mighty tasty!

:( sorry to hear about all this man....hopefully you'll get it fixed somehow...

Okay, I'll go $200 AND I'll pick it up from you! You'll have to settle for paper money though......

hey, get outta here!!!!!

stan i can come up with another $50-60 in various ROLLED change

nickels, dimes, even pennies!!

do you know how rare pennies are getting? you can probably make money just recycling them

Damn Stan. Sorry to hear that. I know the original owner and I don't know what to think.

Has he been cooperative or given any explanation or history of work done that could explain what happened? Does he have any receipts of service done or did he do all the work himself?

Sad to put all that money on a helluva nice 'tard, one of the best imo, and then have this happen.

Hey, I can throw in some old copper pipe! Yeah, that's the ticket! And some left over copper crush washers from doing oil changes.

BIDDING WAR!!!!!!

hopefully it is something simple....

Thanks everyone for the kind words and laughter.. Definitely has made me feel better.

I've been in contact with the original owner, and he's been nothing but awesome as far as answering my many questions. He did all the work himself, and he was really meticulous when I went to go pick up the bike. Who knew something like this would have happened? The gouge marks on the head were suspect, but he swears that he has never noticed it. He checked the valves every 1K, so he would have gone in there 9 times. I know for a fact, I didn't do it. so those marks just seem to come out of nowhere.. Still a mystery.

I've started threads on both TT, and SMJ. Peter (on all forums) has been extremely helpful in helping me diagnose the problems.

Tonight, i'll check the CCT, and drain the oil to look for any metallic bits.

Anything past this, i'll need professional help, and I can only imagine what this will cost..

Carpet fiber!? I got something WAY better! Boxes and boxes of old bicycle parts. Yeah, baby! We're talkin' worn out six speed freewheels, friction shifters, used saddles...... There's no way he can resist!

Seriously, I have myself overreacted with frustration before with stuff like this. Go slow. Check the simple stuff first. It's like Occam's razor; the simplest explanation that explains the events is the most likely.

I'm SSOOOOOOOOO glad, I didn't trade antibling for those roll of quaters and some carbon bits..

Cause, he just fixed my damn bike!

So Bryan comes over to loan me a compression gauge.. Pull the plug, and crap.. won't fit.

I asked if he had anything to do, and if not, he can help me pull the CCT?

He's game, and off we go...

pull, the radiator to get back to the valve covers, and pull the intake valve cover off. He points and laughs at me.

Seems one of the valve adjustment screw bolts had worked itself loose, and one intake valve was closed the whole time!

That would explain why the bike sputtered and ran until it died.

We re-adjusted all 4 valves and decided to start her up. With the radiator dangling and the gas tank not yet installed, we fire her up..

She barks and growls like we had just awaken an angry dog! Settles just fine into the idle, and I was jumping up and down!!

button everything back up, and took her out for a quick ride.

I came back and said there was a huge problem.. It's too fast!

Now the bike purrs like a kitten, but I have not done a 'real' ride yet, so i'll check back tomorrow.

Thanks Bryan.. I owe you beers for life!

Actually, I spoke too soon..

Went for a 'real' ride, and the bike was really boggy.. Felt like really sluggish and was surging.

At time when I would come to a stop, the bike would stall.

I changed the plug and the problem still exists.

Could improperly adjusted valves do this? We adjusted the intake and exhaust valves on different strokes.

Glad to hear the bike run, but I would rather have it run like it did before!

Man i almost spoke too soon. Could the valve adjustment nut be striped or any way the nut could be working itself loose. Out of curiosity.. are you setting the valves on the looser side or tighter side? Maybe its worth your time to pull the head and jug out and inspect it. No harm no foul! Keep us updated! best of luck.

stan you don't owe me anything. well, maybe one beer.

the valves are definitely on the loose side now... but not as loose as they were. spec is .002" but i'm pretty sure they were all .005 or larger prior to last night. now i'd guess they are .003-.004. getting the feeler gages in place without hitting the casting, thus making it difficult to judge the actual gap, is difficult and my fingers are too big to get in there easily too. i would modfy the feelers if i had to do it again.

a nut backing off was the root cause of the "no-start" to begin with, the actuator screw also backed off. none of the threads are stripped, i tightened them down myself.

stan, sorry to hear it still has problems, maybe time for a real mechanic :D maybe we knocked an adjustment screw or two loose putting the bike back together? i still suspect the cam chain maybe skipped a tooth.

I hope you get it worked out, but this is the reason why I would never buy a used bike from anyone, no matter how clean it looked.

Unless the previous owner who does his own work is a certified mechanic, it doesn't mean jack to me. I would rather buy a bike from a person who took it to a shop for all work.
