RD250: Going with the flow...

Were you part of the group that came across HWY 36 last weekend? I saw a bunch of vintage bikes as I was going East. I recognize the coastal turnout as the end of the Leggett leg to the coast (I think).
Great job either way.

Cheers fella. Yes, that was us, what a coincidence. I think around a hundred bikes or so.

You're spot on, it's the 1, just where you hit the coast from Leggett. I love that stretch and it was absolutely perfect for the RD. We spent the Sunday night in Fort Bragg.

Excellent! I spoke to a few guys and they all said they were having a great time. Well, except for the last 4 guys at the Dinsmore store. They were helping one guy with some electrical issue. They didn't need my help though.

yet cruise along at 70 no problem (albeit a lot of 5th / 6th cog swapping.)

The gaps between gearbox ratios could be closer - it's easy to drop out of the powerband on the uphill mountain bits if you don't rev it right out between a couple of cogs. Not too bad though, it's not a race bike.

hanging up the spanners for a bit.

J.

Excellent you got the little smoker out for that journey.

Seems like you could get the spanners out for a bit for a -1 swap on the CS sprocket, eh? Might improve the fun factor immensely. All my 350's run a -1.

Awesome...!

Love the storage device on the seat made to look like a gas can. :p

Haha, gas panic is a thing when your main jet goes from 110 to 230! I think I ran out twice - I was carrying a gallon of 100LL, just in case I got stuck with having to fill up on 87.

@KPKE - I think the 350s might have different gearing, it feels just about right now, 1st is already too low for my liking and it revs out in top easily. It would be over-geared as stock for sure.

This has been a fun thread to watch.
I got a bonus payoff as I was riding Hwy 1 from West Marin to Fort Ross and saw a bunch of you guys headed south. Very, very cool. :cool

Cheers fella - it was a fantastic ride and a bit of a comedown to finish. Oddly enough, I blew the cobwebs out yesterday with a spin on my GSXR, which was a shock to the system to say the least, after 850 miles on the RD!

Flogging a dead horse? Never!

Seeing as I still need a classic bike to ride with my classic bike riding chums, and only somewhat satisfied by last years mods. I've decided to have another go at the RD. Which, most excitingly (and thanks to @Framemaker) involves a new engine, new front brakes and some other stuff, dependent on what I have the time / inclination for.

First off, the I reckon the swingarm on these things is altogether too short, heavy and noodly. I've been busy fashioning a lighter, stiffer, longer version out of the remnants pile of my local metal shop.

First, I made some inserts and caps for chain adjustment, then slotted and cut the spars, taking a fillet out to achieve the required bend.
Made up a jig, and more inserts to hold it all square. Note to self, any further jigs will be made out of remnant 6061 extrusions not bloody steel, which was a bear to square up on my little mill.

After that, I finish welded in the brace and did a very slight post weld, cold set so it all still sat nicely in the jig. A little trim and hammer time on the pivot end to radius it for clearance against the crankcase and then more welding. Again, a very minor cold set after. Just the shock mounts, torque arm boss and bearing carriers for the pivot end to finish up and it should be good! Overall, it's an inch and a half longer, substantially stiffer and 2+lbs lighter than the stock one. Keen to see how it copes with my plans for clutch shredding power.

Back to it!!!! :Port

New motor should be sweet.

Ta! Yeah...I've been more empirical with the port design, so if I can build it right, I'm expecting, eh-hem, a reliable, low 50s HP, under 8500 RPM out of a 350 top end. Or, it will all go BLEURRRHRGH.

I shall not be having any cylinders welded this time.... :)

Update from the shed. After an infusion of parts, courtesy of @Framemaker, I have some more progress to report. I needed a set of 350 heads. The 250 castings seem to be more or less the same, but the combustion chamber and squish are obviously all wrong.

After a bit of measuring, I set about converting some. It took a while and they are probably not perfect (the domes are not carbon copies,) but the volumes are correct as are the squish bands. Will be fun to see how they run.
Amusingly, I think one started life as a DS7 head too as the fins are different. I hope the mismatched appearance won't annoy the purists...:laughing

Let the grinding commence. Actually there was some very tentative milling first. I'm doing a lot more with the transfer ports for the 350, to try and make the arrangement a bit more modern. It's finicky as there is very little meat in the castings. Hopefully should work, I've tried to be a bit more scientific..

Progress currently arrested. I have a whole drawer full of fabulous, made in America Carbide burrs, that came with my lathe...but no 3mm ones to fit the chuck of my new, Chinese 90 degree handpiece. Doh. Amazon to the rescue.

So sorry and so happy to be able to JUST LET GO!
I’ve had some sweet rides. Pity, and a blessing, that I have not kept them all. Condolences to you guys that are able

The chinezium stuff below is what I used to port and case match a recent RZ350 engine rebuild. I was amazed how well those carbide burrs performed.

Good luck!!!

Hi Ken - yes, I'm about half way through now and the 3mm burrs and right angle handpiece have been great. I finally broke a cable inner in my 30buck Harbor Freight Flex shaft motor (which is a plasticy version of the Foredom.) Ordered two replacements for 10bucks and should be away again shortly. Highly recommended.

I've done the exhaust ports, finished opening and raising the transfers, but still have a little angling to do. I need to radius the cutaways at the base of the cylinders and do the boost ports (which I'm going to try and do on the mill.) Hopefully will finish them this week so I can take them to the machine shop to get honed.

In the dentist's chair for boost port surgery. Went OK, just a little clean up to do...

Think I'm done. Might do a bit more polishing of the exh port but I'm going to run them over to the machine shop to get honed to size first. Once they're back I will make a tool to centre the heads, so I can dowel them, then set the squish. Went a mm higher than I wanted on the transfers but I think they should do OK, the overall numbers still make sense. 190EXH and 132Transfers.

Now I need some new pipes!

Cool.. get there! :thumbup

Dentist chair... :laughing

Almost a year from last time, I'm almost there. Got the bike started for the first time today, and it seems largely happy. I managed to tweak my back earlier in the week fitting the pipes, so I've not ridden it further than the end of the alley so far.

Since the last update, I rolled and welded the pipes....
