Really Salinas?

Maybe Jason is right, and our produce is in trouble.

Nothing uncommon and if the SHTF you'll be glad your local police department has this type of gear. The days of doing police work out of a Crown Vic with a revolver on the hip are long gone.

In case S actually HTF, we can use our Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force. After all we spend the most in the world on keeping them. :|

The police needs to focus on crime prevention and other municipal duties.

To expect a local policeman

Thats one of those transports designed to survive an IUD explosion. :cool :laughing

Military surplus given city Police whom ever wants them. Can't get your hands on a Hummer but a MRAP no problem. What better then to guard a dozen of sprinkles Donuts.

Please describe a scenario in which a military vehicle (as pictured above) would provide a plausible defense against terrorism...to our produce.

I was speaking in general, not specifically in regards to this one in Salinas. If you have to step up to military-grade hardware to truly diffuse a situation, perhaps you're stepping outside the bounds of what a police department generally does.

big bug sprayer tanks to get rid of insect insurgencies?

If that thing could carry a gallon of fucking water I could see where it would be useful.

Salinas is hood
Pretty much this...

We have a ridiculously low number of LEOs per capita and an astonishingly high violent crime rate. LOTS of drug business and gang business here, much of it due to our proximity to Soledad.

I'm not a fan of militarizing police departments, but in I believe the vehicle makes sense. Intimidating, plus good cover; make the street heroes think twice.

(I won't even go into the anecdotes...)

I read about this in another article. They mentioned that they are selling *used* military equipment to PD's so the Govt wouldn't take the full blow of wasting money. Something about irresponsible spending and a lot of equipment being decommissioned even though they are basically brand new. It's supposed to be a win-win. The Govt will get some money back and the PD will have new equipment at a fraction of the actual cost.

People in the comments argued, pulled up statistics on how many times Salinas SWAT had been deployed, how many of those incidents involved violence, gangs, yada yada. No numbers I remember off the top of my head.

I've only been to Salinas once. I can say that I have never met any thugs out of there :rolleyes. But... Motha fuckas always looking to make a name and gain some recognition so you never know. I'm with a previous poster though. That shit needs to be in Oakland. Do they have a Gatling gun that shoots rubber bullets? :cool

it will look good in the Rodeo parade.... :thumbup

:laughing But his cracked me up!

Sorry Alex, not buying the "shit hits the fan" line.

Really?? Go to the beach and take a good look inside the Jeep Cherokee's of the 'Beach Patrol'. I did last year when we rescued a baby sea otter - long story - and then followed the guy back to his Jeep to see the arsenal they have inside. :wow Apparently there is some really heavy shit going down on the beaches north of Santa Cruz, as in major drug operations landing shipments.

Salinas is overrun with gangs. These type of SWAT vehicles are partially funded by federal grants and if there was ever a major gang incident - which is not unthinkable in Salinas or Stockton or many other CA cities - then having this type of hardware could be critical.

I've seen the one from the City of Sunnyvale, I'm pretty sure San Jose has something similar. In a major incident, SWAT teams don't really want to show up in a mommy SUV.

I believe its got something to do with surplus military equipment. I'd rather the cops have it than leave it in Afghanistan where some fuck makes money off it.

Does this "major incident" involves IED exploding under SWAT vehicles?

If not, then this MRAP is not needed. Heck LA's gangs are older and tougher and LAPD's SWAP and Metro guys have been kicking ass and taking names without needing MRAPs.
