Refueling while seated?

For short riders is kinda hard.

I've done it a few times. i dunno WTF I was thinking when I did it, though!

I can only put 1 foot down at stops and you have to get really close to reach the card slot, keypad, pump nozzle and fuel selection.

I think i might have even pulled up so close that i put my foot down on the curb of the gas pump. :shocker

F'in accident waiting to happen. I have to remember not to do that again- just get off and fill up, and pay me some respects to my wild west cowboy
forefathers (....on my steel horse, I :ride, I'm a cowboy.....)

HAHA! i feel the same way my friend!:thumbup
short rider gotta do thing differently but its not necessarily a bad thing.

I straddle when I fuel up my Streetfighter. I haven't figure out how on my Vespa yet...

Probably been covered, I probably searched for the wrong terms, so here it is again (possibly).

Today I saw a guy stopped at a gas pump trying to fuel up his bike while still seated. For myself I always park, get off, and refuel with the bike on the side stand. So...how does everyone else do it? I guess you can get more gas in if you're sitting on it and holding everything level, but the extra few tenths of a gallon don't seem worth the hassle of balancing a bike and working a pump at the same time. Thoughts?

I never get off my bike to fuel up.

It's not hard or awkward. :dunno

I used to do it all the time. If you do it right, there's no risk of spilled fuel in your lap.

Of course, that was using the old (and non-California) style pump nozzle with no "boot" on it.
When I fill up any of my older bikes in California, I have to use one hand to hold the nozzle, and the other with a key or other object placed between the boot and the filler neck to allow air to vent out. That's a lot easier if I'm not sitting on the bike.

+1 I'm inseam challenged and use a tank bag usually so I get off to fill up. TBH, I can't remember the last time I saw someone out here fill up while on the bike but I'm sure it happens. YMMV :)

I've been refueling while mounted since '89, no problems. The only two-wheeler I got off of to refuel was my Helix.

My Eliminator took in an extra 0.3-0.4 gallons if refueled vertically as opposed to on the sidestand (which was important with a 3.2 gallon tank). The 650R and GS500 only get an extra 0.1-0.2 gallons when vertical, but now it's a habit.

I did have an Iowa gas station attendant (remember those?) shut down my pump once, back in '90; he felt that refueling while on the moto was dangerous.

Everything is more laid back up north. Its not a race or an issue of manners at the gas station as there are always free pumps available. My question is...am I the only person in the country that still pays with good old AMERICAN cash? Credit cards are evil!! On another note I know it stays cooler in the bay area but up here in the summer time high 90's to 113 degrees is the norm. On many of our group rides (where we stop at a gas station every 50-75 miles) the people who squeez every last drop into their tank find their bike pissing gas out after it expands from the heat. In a city where there is a billion gas stations why would you worry about "10 more miles"

On or off as long as you get gas in the damn thing! on a different subject, the weather sucks.

i haven't used cash at a gas station in forever... CC's aren't evil if you use them wisely, however I think a lot of us are probably using VISA-Debit or similar cards... effectively we're paying with cash too

I've never heard of fuel dripping onto the motor and catching on fire. But if it did, straddling the bike would make it 1000x worse, since the tank is gonna spill when you jump off. That would never happen right? What if your overflow tube was leaking or you fucked it up servicing the bike? Autoignition for gas occurs around 500 deg.

lol i suppose this boring ass thread got to be so long cuz everyone is avoiding the crappy weather and NOT riding. seriously...who cares.

oh, i always fill up on the bike haha

What part of a bike is 500 degrees?

The only time I get off my bike to fuel it is when I'm using a gas can. In 25 years, I've never had a problem. :dunno

Debit card FTMFW!

I refuel while straddling, but I do put the kickstand down... Regardless, I would bet that fire is fire, whether the moto's on the stand or not.

These questions always remind me of the thread where a guy passive-aggressively called out everyone for not noticing him and stopping on the side of the freeway during the morning commute because he ran out of gas. He claimed that 'he KNEW how to fill up a bike' though it was later revealed he used the side-stand method and thought that would give him the full advertised tank capacity fill-up. So effectively he starved himself at the pump. It was a new gen Ninja 250 with fuel gage instead of a petcock, too. *sigh* That was a good thread. Anyone else remember it?

Seems more likely that he shoved the nozzle in instead of pulling back on its foreskin and only got 1/2 a tank.

I think a simple poll could have satisfied my curiosity. But there's nothing wrong with discussing it. :laughing

Since we are here let's get down to the real important question "Which way is cooler to fill your tank?"

I am working on wedging my tires up against the curb so I can balance without even putting my feet down and texting with one hand while tapping out a beat on my tank with the other listening to the tone change as it fills with the auto fill lock on the handle.
:cool

Oh, I forgot to answer the question, I get off.
