I think the rep system would work as long as it wasn't active in the Sink, and it required multiple reps on a post before it would have any effect. I liked it as a way to give props to a specific post without adding a "+1" post to the thread.

I completely agree with this statement. two + rep votes on one post = one point. No Non-moto forum rep points allowed.

Most us maxed out the rep long ago.
I'd say we were at 5x the amount of green squares we had, but they all didn't show anyway.

It sure was a nice way to tell someone "fuck you" without getting banned, though.

Not really, but post counts were also acting as a fake reputation system back in the day.

For example, you're a brand new user...just joined BARF today...and your first post is a question about motorcycle maintenance. You get two quick answers that are conflicting, would you be naturally inclined to give the benefit of the doubt to a user with 846[1] posts, or the guy with 14,398[2] posts?

I worry that new users might assume, consciously or subconsciously, that the user who's been here longer and participated more (i.e. the one with a higher post count) would be more informed and trustworthy. That thought makes me shudder.
