Rev bombs?

Cool, thanks for vindicating. I personally, don't bother with rev bombs cause I think they are pointless and looks/sound stupid, but just curious what others thought.

Do you guys not consider loud cruisers blipping the throttle to be a rev bomb? Because I see/hear that all the time and mostly those instances are just people trying to draw attention and having nothing to do with filtering or maneuvering in any way. I find that behavior annoying as hell and love that South Park made fun of the practice perfectly.

If your bike can't idle at a red light without having to blip the throttle incessantly, get your POS off the road. If it can idle then let it idle and don't be an ass.

Link??? I wanna see South Park parody!

Just wanted to see what's the opinion on BARF on rev bombing?

Is it effective? When should the bomb be dropped? What if I have a stock exhaust? Does it really make sense to get an loud aftermarket just so cars can hear you? Do people do it so cars would make space when they split?

Last week, on my commute through local roads in stop-go traffic I could hear an R1 approaching from far far away. The rider rev'd the crap out of the bike, bouncing off the limiter a couple of times, all way splitting down the street while going ~5-10mph. I personally thought it was super annoying.

I am curious what's the accepted etiquette around here.

Seriously??

"Rev bombing" is only done by ignorant douche bags. It serves no purpose other than to piss people off.

Rev bombs and high beams in traffic. Both asshole moves. Do neither.

I use my high beam in DAYLIGHT when splitting. I want to be seen among all the glare from chrome and windows. You do what you want.

Mad

I have done it once or twice on the freeway when someone started merging INTO me, was more of a panic reaction than anything else though.

Something I think no one has mentioned, a car in front of you wont hear you rev bombing if you are 20+ feet behind him if they have their windows up. Sound deadening is very good in modern cars, they might hear if their windows are down and music is off but its rare. If your bike still has a stock slip on there is NO chance they are hearing you.

Use your horn, thats what its for.

Just add hazard lights for the trifecta. Rode with him on the Bay Bridge last night. 80+mph still flashing those hazards :laughing

I have ridden motorcycles for a long time with many good ears wasted on riding gp style 2 strokes....what rev bomb? :teeth

Yeah, they can blow their motor up as far as I'm concerned trying to force me to move if it's not safe or convenient for me to do it.

Better to add a headlight modulator and been seen even more.

This in spades. And if you don't have a decent horn or better yet, horns, buy and install them. I used to run a pair of quality FIAMM's and they would wake up the dead. I found a way to mount them out of sight. When anyone would try to merge into me or do something else stupid, they'd get a good blast. Without fail the reactions by the driver would be nearly instantaneous and often funny. They'd look around expecting a truck and find just me and my motorcycle. Far, far better and more effective than reving your engine.

FYI, when running a headlight modulator while splitting, it's remarkable how many people move over for you.

It seems more and more riders are using their hazards when splitting. There's a guy on my commute on a BMW 1200RT that has bright as fuk hazards and they suck if you're behind him. He turns them on and off as he gets in and out of the traffic. There's also a guy on either a Vstrom or a Versys that does the same thing. I always let him pass 'cause he splits way faster then I do but then I have to fall back because I find the hazards are very distracting.

You can't see the hazards from the front anyway. I don't get it.

Rant off.

Yeah, not sure when it started but I see this quite regularly these days. The obvious commuters do it maybe 30-40% of the time. Doesn't seem useful to me but whatever.

What's the legality on the modulators? Anyone had issues w/ them and the cops?

Modulators are legal in the US, in daylight only.

I hate to say it but today I bombed one because I was cut off and the horn just doesn't cut it. Was in the commuter lane not splitting and lady just rolled right out without looking. She got the full force of my exhaust. It wasn't my finest moment but it got the point across. I'm ok with using it when needed, aka emergency, but if you're just making noise why bother?

Those moments are far and few.

They’re just letting you know they’re a hazard. :laughing

It’s funny, for as universal as the negative opinion seems to be about rev bombing, I see riders do it every day. A couple of days ago, I hit a false neutral and accidentally rev-bombed the cars next to me. Even though it was an accident I felt like an asshole.

Because horns are designed specifically to draw attention to a dangerous situation or alert people, motor noises aren't. There's a very, very high chance that rev bombing does nothing but confuse them.

Use your horn. Upgrade it if you need to.

:rofl That Southpark clip was hilarious!

What no one has mentioned: I wouldn't do it for all the mentioned reasons, but the big one to me is What is that doing to my engine!!!

You want to decrease mileage or blow yours up, go ahead dummy! :x

My feelings exactly. I cringe when I hit a false neutral. Why would I do it on purpose?
