Rev bombs?

:rofl That Southpark clip was hilarious!

What no one has mentioned: I wouldn't do it for all the mentioned reasons, but the big one to me is What is that doing to my engine!!!

You want to decrease mileage or blow yours up, go ahead dummy! :x
Dinchaknow, if you don't rev a Harley at least once a minute, that you'll get carbon build-up in the pipes and you'll reduce the flow of air outa da pipes! :twofinger

Agree on the southpark, that was brutal! :laughing

I"ve got a neighbor, who goes by every morning/afternoon I assume on his way to/from work.

He's not only got short pipes that are louder than anything on that HD, but he's also added one of those HD noise devices, that has a mic that sends the pipe sound to his speakers, & blares it out at high volume....making it even louder than any normal pipe sound!

It's so obnoxious I've debated chasing him down, even w/one leg! :mad:mad:mad

:wtf Huh? That's a thing? that's absolutely redonkulous.

been around a while now & of course popular w/the HD crowd. I haven't bothered to go look it up; all I know is it made a neighbor's already obnoxious bike even more so.

I'm thinking it's just an audio pickup placed near the exhaust, that feeds to the audio system? Someone go look it up...

You ought to hear it when he & a bunch of his buddies w/same system go by after a Sunday ride. Makes everyone stop & look! :mad

Couldn't you report him for an illegal muffler system?

Also, there are noise ordinances in plenty of cities these days, if he's doing that early in the morning. I know that people with barking dogs are now getting a visit from the police in Richmond if a neighbor gets annoyed enough to report it.

That is really friggin obnoxious to pipe it through his speakers! :thumbdown

Before I started riding, I had encountered rev bombs but I had no idea what the rider intended. I always strongly suspected that blipping while idling was a stupid behavior that has persisted through conformity: "Bobby does it, so I do it. He does it because Frank did it. Frank did it because Eric did it in the 80s. Eric did it because John didn't know jack about tuning the carbs."

Usually I duck out of the way of a revbombing splitter because I'm pretty sure of the following:

  1. They're low-skill riders.
  2. They're unlikely to stop if they damage my car while splitting.
  3. They're unlikely to admit any fault if they hit my car or bike while splitting.
  4. They're likely to misrepresent the facts when they give their side of the story.
  5. The chances of a physical altercation are good if they do stop.
  6. I don't have time for any of the above nonsense.

Because horns are designed specifically to draw attention to a dangerous situation or alert people, motor noises aren't. There's a very, very high chance that rev bombing does nothing but confuse them.

Use your horn. Upgrade it if you need to.

While you have a point about horns my engine catches attention way faster. It’s about noise not what produces it.

I think this summarizes the reaction from non-riders pretty perfectly:

Before I started riding, I had encountered rev bombs but I had no idea what the rider intended.

Also note that almost all exhaust systems are pointed BACKWARDS, so the majority of the noise will be going behind you. Horns are pointed forward. So, if bombing them does get their attention, then they have to figure out where it's coming from as well.

If you want to keep countering my points please keep going but your posts aren’t changing my real world experiences.

This is true. As far as I can tell, my motorcycle horns can barely be heard. Also we've all read tales of motorists actively trying to kill a rider who honked at them. Never heard of that from revving.

I'm not supporting revving to get the attention of every motorist who didn't leave you enough room. But there is a case where I find aftermarket exhaust (on the right bike) a lot better than a horn.

Several weeks ago, a car started to change lanes into me. I was passing him in my lane, not splitting. I twisted the throttle to evade, and the bark from my low-revving twin through the street legal slip-on was enough that the driver jerked back into his lane.

So I alerted him more effectively than my beep-beep horn would have, didn't have to take any extra step other than evading (didn't reach for horn button, signal left by mistake, etc), and reduced the chance of triggering road rage. It seems like all win to me.

When I had a stock R1200R, revving = sewing machine. Useless.
Now I ride electric and revving = quiet whining. Less than useless.

I do have an air horn that actually gets the job done.

Whenever I hear HD straight pipes, I do my best eye roll and say, "That is SOOOO 19th century!"

I seem to remember that as well. But with the muffler swapped (cat still in place), I can hear it when I open the throttle. And I can remove and install the wheel without moving the muffler.

Hazards are used by selfish people

If a car was using flashers and trying to pass between other cars, people would think he/she needs to get to the hospital or something like that. You don't see it often, because people don't need to rush to the hospital very often. For a biker to do it just because he wants to split is the epitome of selfishness.

Being one who has ridden unbaffled bikes around town many times in my riding career I don't' think I have the heart to report a fellow rider. Besides, I live in an unincorporated township, not a city. I'd have to report it to the county (ALCSO) or CHiPs.

The piping it into the speakers makes it more than obnoxious, that's my biggest bitch. Even riding unbaffled, I tried to keep the revs down around town at early hours; riding at low rpm's did that.

I figure he'll grow out of it as I did...I'll just have to put up w/it awhile.

I wouldn't hesitate to report him. He's a douche bag.
