Rider Longevity

It must be my age, but I don't care how long I live, but how I live. No one gets out alive. When it's your time,it's your time.

All you can do is your best, make wise choices, know yourself and your current skill set.

Maybe it's because I've been done so many times, more than most on here, for a wide variety of reasons. The only reason I am alive is ......I don't know. I've had get offs that killed other people, but not me. Why?

It wasn't my skills that did it, sometimes it was my skill that got me in that crash. It wasn't my choices that did it. It just wasn't my time.

It's foolish to live worrying bout dying or how long you live. Just live each day as its your last. Hug your love ones like it is the last time you see them. Enjoy every sandwich. Don't leave hard feelings, arguements unsettled. Say I love you more....and mean it.

This is what I learned from being alive when others died doing the something I did.

I am not a believer in fate/when it's your time it's your time. I will say that I agree with the spirit of most of this post, though. Live hard, love with abandon, and remind your loved ones how much you care.

The bolded part is one thing with which I definitely don't agree, however. Skills never get someone into a crash. Overconfidence in your abilities, poor decisions, etc. can get you into bad situations. Skills are what get you out of them.

Awareness and sound decision making are what help prevent bad situations. Skills bail you out (hopefully) if your awareness and decision making fail. It's all semantics anyway. Obviously, one should work to build skills and stay focused to avoid having to use those skills.

I take an active role in my safety, looking for the potential of a threat rather than a passive role where I'm reacting to a threat that has already developed and may not present any options that have me getting home safely that day.

I like this point, and your point about constantly re-evaluating your position on the road and where else you can be - both require situational awareness. I see a lot of riders sometimes just cruising down the freeway, sometimes riding in cars' blind spots, and then get taken by surprise / outraged when a car starts moving over / merging into them. Let's not play the "whose fault" game with a situation like that, the rider's life is on the line, so stay moving and stay where people can see you.

Other times, I see riders almost "seeking out" a problem to be outraged over - there was a video posted a while back about a guy coming to a stop at a light next to a BMW driver on his phone / playing w/ his phone. The guy yells at the driver, and then rides like he's blocking him (?) or otherwise deliberately holding the BMW driver up, and got clipped for it. The BMW driver should lose his license and see some jail time for it, but in my own humble opinion, the rider put himself in a dangerous situation. People behave badly every day, your greatest asset is to be able to gas it and get the hell away from them. Don't stand next to the trouble or wag your finger at it.

Don't stand next to the trouble or wag your finger at it.

My grandfather, besides telling me to "get the fuck outta his way", also said, "just because you come across dog shit, doesn't mean you have to step in it".

You aren't me... we see differently... I'm not telling you how to talk.

I'm not changing the way I talk, to please you, or anyone else.

I can't help it if there are people that perceive my words, differently than I'm saying them.

By vote of the moderators, Louemc has been suspended. Lou was asked multiple times through both posts in the open forum and in PMs to find a way to interact with other members in a civil and constructive way, and above you see his response to one of those requests.

One of the cool things about BARF is that it is a party to which everyone is invited. Budman hosts this party in his living room. If the host of the party asks you politely to be more courteous to his other guests, and you blow him off, you get shown the door. However, Bud is pretty gracious, and he lets people come back, and if their behavior stops being an issue, everything is copacetic.

Lou is an institution around here. He's been riding longer than most of us (yes, even me! :twofinger ) have been alive. He's got a tremendous base of experience, and we'd love for that to be shared in a way that others can hear. We're looking forward to his return.

I sincerely hope that he will return with a more positive demeanor, ready to share his experiences with the rest of us.

I like Lou even though he is a crotchety, grouchy ol sucker. It helps if you read his posts in a yoda voice. I hope he doesn't give up on teh barfs.

I concur ^^ - My interpretation of Lou is he is passionate about riding, riders, and safety.

I have nobody on my ignore list. I believe there is value in every BARF post :thumbup

This^^^
But like many, I have my breaking point.
Sooner or later enough is enough.
(I will also take this opportunity to look in the mirror and tighten up my own game)

I agree with the suspension, and I also agree with the sentiment that I look forward to his return, just with a more positive attitude.

I like Lou also but I believe there have been many times when he has crossed the line and that obfuscates any good message he has to offer. I believe a "kinder, gentler" BARF is more constructive.

Kudos to the Mods.

Im another one who didnt find Lou's posts offensive..but im pretty lenient with people and appreciate diversity...makes life more interesting.

kxmike, I appreciate diversity and different viewpoints. It wasn't Lou's viewpoints that were the issue. It was the delivery of his message and his constant belittling of and personal attacks against all who didn't agree with him. I agree 100% with the suspension, and I hope that it has the desired effect. I enjoy about 90% of what Lou posts, but he does cross the line. A lot.

Lou's problem wasn't the content but the delivery.
Exactly. Making yourself more important by demeaning others is not an uncommon social issue, but that doesn't mean that barf, or anyone else must continue to accept it.

I have posted in total agreement with louemc and he still argued with me. Sometimes, any positive message is lost in the his continuous berating of other riders. I welcome a lunch and a ride WITH him, one day.
