Riding and Crabbing at Pacifica Pier 11/6 Sunday with a Crab Feed afterwards

Hey Chet.. since it's your very first time crabbing.. I'll have a pole and crab lure with your name on it. I've only got about three poles..maybe four.. and I'll bring them all.. that way other noobs can have a stab at crabbing :)

But for those of you that are unfamiliar.. here are some things that you'll need. a fishing pole with a crab box runs about ($6 bucks) or a crab pot both pictured below.

ok, so how does one actually do this with a fishing pole and the above pictured stuff. i have a couple fresh water poles. do you put the bait box in the net thingy and let it all settle to the bottom then wait a bit and reel it up to see what you get?

what weight of line is on the pole?

I surely hope not! However, if it is.. than we'll all scream NNIIIINNNJJAAA! rush in and dominate the pier.. those fishermen don't stand a chance amonsgt all of us barfers.:thumbup

i'm thinking angry faces should be broughten. not sure if i'll make it, but will have GF along if i do.

Hey AuntieBling.. all really good questions! Thanks for asking :thumbup

Crab snares are more popularly used during crab season off this particular pier, crab snares can be casted out pretty far, while nets just basically go straight down.

.. snares are basically small metal cages with loops, there's an opening door where you put a weight and your bait inside and then just close it. The size of the weight - about a 5 ounce flat sinker.

Crab snares are attached to fishing poles that are ocean friendly. The weight of the crabs (lets think optimistically) can sometimes snap a flimsy pole so make sure that it's a med/heavy action pole. Some people even use 12 to 15 foot rods. a 8-10 pound test should be fine for your fishing line.. (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

So in a nutshell: grab a sturdy pole..attach your 5 dollar crab snare and throw a weight and some bait..and you're good to go!

Or, throw some chicken and some squid into a good crab pot.. drop it down and let em come!

I like to drop my line by the base of the pier.. i see lotsa muscles and other organisms attached to it.. and I believe that the crabs go there for snack time. It's always worked for me.. so no far casting..just a simple drop. I then check the line when I see my pole dip..sometimes it can happen in a matter of minutes.. the fun part is reeling it in and hoping that the suckers dont fall off. It's alot of fun.. and I'm a girly girl.. so if I can do it.. anybody can :p

15 to 25lb test monofilament line is good. Anything less is a bit too stretchy. Use a rod/reel spec'd for that line rating.

I'm golfing in the morning, followed by some bbq at a friend's place, but I will DEFINITELY stop by afterwards. I'll bring cigars and some tasty beer and wine. This is in my town, how could I possibly miss it? Wish I were free for the crabbing portion of the day, as that sounds like fun!

I was just about to ask about licenses.

I thought you used cans of dog food with holes punched in them for bait :dunno

no license needed on the pier. However I heard that you MUST have a crab gauge though if you're crabbing, correct me if I'm wrong.

For bait, I use either A) Squid in snares B) "Fish bone" or fish heads from 99 Ranch Market cause it's cheap or C) Chicken thighs but this seems to attract stupid sea lions more......

Oh and there is a limit on how many loops a snare can have but I don't remember what it is. I just know some snares are sold with the correct number and some have one too many.

5 loops max. The ones sold at Sports Authority have 6, those are crappy.

Get the snares at Rusty hook, hi's tackle, or coastside bait.

If you don't have a crab gauge, you can use a tape measure. I have 4 crab gauges if anyone needs a loaner.

:facepalm

Dog food?! Never heard that one before.

I think my dad used to use chicken liver for crawfish and crabs.

Thumper's Allowed?

I know, I know bad title.

I moved from NYC to Montara in the last year and have been dying to catch crabs, I mean Striped Bass, or was that Mussels.

Anyway, I need to meet people that ride, even though I'm a slow one cylinder I would love to join you all.

I'll be delayed for the start, should I just keep walking down the pier with my rod and cough BARFER's to locate u all or is there a hand signal, flag or batman-esk sign I should be on the lookout for?

Should be pretty easy to spot a large crowd of people on the pier with moto gear lying around. You'll see a bunch of helmets, jackets, and people wearing boots.

Welcome! You can check out photos from our Halloween party and see if you recognize some of those characters out on the pier!

I'm gonna bring a couple cans of Alpo and we'll just see who catches moar :x

I would be throughly impressed if you catch a crab with a can of a dog food :laughing tell you what.. if that happens..I will seriously bow down :hail to you and NEVER doubt your ability to crab EVER.

:applause I've gotta applaud your gumption and ability of non -conformity :thumbup

crabs eat the decaying remains of everything that falls to the sea floor. no doubt in my mind they'll eat dogfood like it's an in-n-out burger

Bring some cat food too........ this will be an interesting experiment..... just not likely in MY net haha

Most likely there will be lots of cagers due to potential rain. But look for the sexy and handsome group of folks on the pier. We'll be easy to spot.

Just picked up a 1 piece rain suit...Think I'm riding no matter what! Is that a terrible idea lol someone tell me now
