Go watch the fight.

And watch Conlans response to the result.
He tore the Boxing judges and Russians a new one live on Irish TV. Tough to understand for the non Paddy but you get the idea.
Gotta feel for the guy, World Champion, gives up years of his prime at Amateur level in pursuit of Olympic gold. All to get robbed by a line up of Judges with pockets full of Rubles. The Russians also bought the heavyweight gold by all accounts too.

Serious question with no mocking intended: Do you actually feel "pride" when athletes you don't know personally win for your country even though realistically you have contributed nothing to their careers?

Do you feel like America is somehow better because someone from a State you don't live in was able to toss an object further than anyone else in the world?

Dude who is pissing in to your cereal every morning? :wtf

It's no different then rooting for your favorite <insert sport here> team, or motoGP rider, or whatever.

a form of pride, sure. and you? Do you feel pride if/when Canada wins olympic ice hockey?

nah. how about you?

Please don't judge my good faith questions based on an alternative discussion that has nothing to do with this.

So you're saying you feel pride in the accomplishments of those on your fav sport team? I can honestly say I've never felt the feeling of pride for anyone's accomplishments that I had no hand in. I recognize this is not the standard.

I don't feel pride necessarily, but definitely excitement. Same with watching random sports; I don't feel like part of the team or anything, but still get happy when the team I want to win, wins.

That makes a lot of sense. I guess I confused the two emotional states to some degree.

I agree with you about "pride," and have always thought people who cheer "USA USA" (or equivalent), who go nuts in buying gear, etc. are a bit sheep-like.

Since you ask in good faith, I'll do the same; do you perhaps take pride in being contrarian? I think I've noticed that with your posts. You seem to say things to get a rise, or to use as an opportunity to let us know how unique you are. :twofinger

Thanks for your weigh in.

I am a non-conformist, not a contrarian.

A contrarian does the opposite of what people are doing. A conformist does what everybody else wants. A non-conformist does what they want. I typically do believe in my position when I argue it....but you might be right that I settle on an unpopular position at times to have the opportunity to discuss it. I of course realize that holding unpopular opinions makes you unpopular.

So while I don't take pride in being a non-comformist, I certainly don't feel guilt, shame, or any negative emotions when people lost their shit responding.

:thumbup

OK, I meant no offense. I happily consider myself non-conformist, but can at times veer to being contrarian (working on this, not a good quality, in my opinion). That's why I asked, especially since there have been times where you called yourself a dbag, etc. for your posts.

Well that was mostly in response to people who implied or straight up said there is some negative aspect about me simply because I hold an opinion.

I took no offense. I have a unique viewpoint on things. I am colder and less emotional about most stuff. I'm also an introvert and tire of people's presence easily.

I shall stop shitting in this thread.

Was no shitting by you, was just curious. If anything, I probably shat on it through the threadjack. Back to how classless Hope Solo is! :laughing

I emboldened part of your post, because same applies to me (definitely introvert, definitely limited patience for social events, am described as missing a right brain, etc.). I've read books on it, etc., and while trying to remain open-minded, I like how my mind approaches things.

SO yeah, once I learned that my introversion was not a disease and that embracing it and figuring out how to store your energy for social events you MUST attend, life got a lot better. I don't feel ashamed that I don't want to dance at a wedding when everybody else is. Why? I don't like dancing except if I am dancing with a lady who is into me. Otherwise, group dancing? Blah. Dancing alone? I don't enjoy it. Hitting on a girl and trying to convince her I'm cool and suave because of how I wiggle my body? nuh-uh.

Extroverts are the ones who assume everybody is like them. That extrovert girl who knows deep inside that the handsome dude she wants to dance with really wants to dance if only someone would encourage him? He doesn't fucking want to dance.

Sorry for the double-thread jack if you want to start a discussion or PM me we can move it elsewhere.

Interesting, my last post on it here too, and to keep it somewhat on point, China and India are apparently very disappointed with their performances at Rio. India especially, 1st medal today, nation of 1.3 billion people. They do have a badminton player still in it (I think). China way under recent performances (home field in 08 I guess), but losing in things like gymnastics, badminton (!!!), table tennis (!!!), etc. What's next, diving?

Anyway, I've thought introversion to be misunderstood, but definitely never felt ashamed. People can wonder why you seem not to be having a great time, but you just experience and show things differently.

We may not have a lot of friends, but they will tend to be awesome ones. :party

Can this be anything other than evidence that the richer the country is the better the athletes do? In a country of 1.3 B if they did what the rich countries do (i.e. identify and separate the young talent early) and then throw all the resources behind them, they'd probably start kicking a lot of ass.

In China if a young kid is identified as having the right bone structure for future sports, they'll get more and better food.
