Oh man.. heart is broken again today.

I am sad to share that Ed Maloney / AKA Sweeping Winger has passed away. :rip

I have been trying to contact him for a while and feared something happened and Mean Dad did me a solid by driving by to check on him and found out from the neighbors Ed has moved on. Thanks MD.

Ed was a kind man.. the only barfer that made it to every BARF rally we have had. He had a custom barf license plate frame for his car. The only one in existence. At the Rydther Rally in '21 I gave him a barfie for being such a dedicated Rallyman.

He had given up his Honda Goldwing a couple years ago but became our sweep in his Mercedes Coup. in fact he gave me a ride to The Bank bar in Taft and also ferried me up to the Red Dog Saloon at the Rydther Virginia City Rally. Two OG's that shared a little time during his last two rallies.

I first met Ed in '08 at our first Rally and we rode some together. On 120 (the east side of 395) we had a unique experience. He was on his big red Goldwing and we were doing 100mph over the big whoops when a helicopter raised up out of the canyon paralleling us. Shocked us both! :wow

That night we laughed about that as we both thought it was a CHP bird at first, but it was not. He was a member of the Goldwing club too, a Navy Vet (Seabee) :flag and a family man. Ed was always quiet and polite, but would share a whisky here and there.

Going to miss you Ed. Condolences to the members here that knew him and to his family :rose

So.. I am renaming the RideMoar Rally to the Sweeping Winger Rally.
Godspeed my friend. Godspeed. :cry

Nice write-up Bud.
Another loss hurts around here. I'm happy you got to spend some time with him on those last rallies as he was driving you. That image brought a smile to my face. I'm sure it did for you too.

RIP Ed! It was always a pleasure to share the rallies with Ed. Wonderful bloke with a sharp sense of humour. I'll certainly miss chatting to and riding with Ed at the rallies as I'm sure many here will do.

Ed will be immortalized for stating that a Friday ride out to a Kernville rally was akin to a 350 mile hot lap! Flying Hun's fault of course :rofl

I'm absolutely gutted at this news. As with Bud, I first met Ed in Hawthorne in 2008. Not only did I ride with him at many rallies, Ed was game for lots of hijinks. He rode with me up Hwy 16 to 20 to Leesville-Ladoga (when it was unpaved) to get to an AFM weekend at Thunderhill. He joined Banjoboy and me on some great rides up to Quincy and beyond. On the way to the first Kernville rally, we were flying pretty much all the way there, and Ed who would claim he was slow, would always catch up to the group a moment or two after we stopped. He famously said, "That's not riding, that's qualifying!"

Ed would chide me on my route choices from time to time, and I remember one time he split from the group as we were going to head over Yuba Pass because he thought the weather would be less extreme over Donner. He admitted later that it had been a mistake. He had a sense of humor about it. :laughing

We had so many adventures we shared. When his wife stopped riding with him, he sold his Wing and bought a Versys because I love mine so much. Then he decided that was a mistake, so he chucked that in for a Ninja 1000/Z1000SX, then ultimately back to another Wing as his last bike. He didn't get to ride that one as much as he wanted because he was caring for his wife who was slipping into dementia, but he would get free when he could. Of course, caretaking for a spouse who's slipping away took a toll on him.

All these stories of Ed are rattling around in my head right now, and I'm sure I'll come up with more by morning - and mourning.

Here's what you need to know about Ed; he was a kind, thoughtful, humble, he had a great dry wit, he was a good friend, and he was one hell of a rider.
:rip :rose

Bud, I'm digging through my photos, and I'll share what I find.

RIP, Ed
I got to know him during a few group rides. Great guy to bench race with too.
saw him at Concord motorsports in 2021. He was always going through different bikes or vehicles. A real motorhead

I expected to see Ed’s smile at Rallies and I too was pleased he drove to Taft. Deserving of a rally in his honor. Always considerate and interested, agree with all that’s been said.
Good on y’all for checking up on him.
