Salt water reef tanks.

I bought a pair of little 5 gallon starter tanks for my kids today, one in each bedroom. They're running now, the kids will get to pick out a couple fish tomorrow.

I'll be looking for a 55ish gallon tank to finally start saltwater for myself, too. I'll probably scour craigslist for awhile.

You should mention that your tank aren't cycled. Unless the fish store is trying to hose you, our kids will be limited to a very small selection of fish and the workers/owner would even suggest that you don't buy fish at all.

If you insist on getting fish(I'm assuming it's freshwater), get a platy(ONE platy) or a goldfish(not the fancy ones, the cheap carnival ones) and leave it in there for 2 weeks. After that you can bring it back for store credit and pick out whatever you want.

Factor5....got anything to trade?

Not anything you might want. I only started doing softies and only have some pink zoas, pulsing xenia and metallic green mushrooms. None of which I'm willing to frag.:(

Yeah, these are freshwater and they're not getting to pick whatever they want, they'll get a Danio or two and that's about it.

I've got some pulsing xina and some green mushrooms I'm willing to part with for any frags you might have.

Oh I should also mention I have never fraged before. So umm any info or tips you have would be great. I have two other tanks I can use to put the frags in.

damn it man stop posting pics of that mandrin, i cant afford seting up a salt water tank now!!! my one and a half hobbies is enough but man if i had a house i would sell drugs to support a salt water tank if i had to.

you guys are hardcore... i just got my kiddo 2 fish... first time i've EVER had fish... and they're just little ol goldfish in a 3 gallon tank, and i'm all stressin out about if i'm doing it right... hahaha! great thread!

Nope. Nada. Not even sand or live rock.

Needless to say, I passed. :laughing

well I tried fraging today. I took a piece of my pulsing xenia. Time will tell if it takes or not. Its still alive so thats a good sign lol.

Hook it up, Raul. Mine is dying. Iodide, calcium and water changes don't do anything.

just a hint if you make up a spray or brush on type backing that can be applied on the backside of your aquarium (can be applied to the outside of tank, so no interfering with current set up) would make those rocks and reefs pop. I used to use blue with some white in it, or black with some blue tints in it.
I used to custom build these aquariums in Hawaii, except there we could not have live reefs, so I made molds and hand painted reef set ups. The backing makes a huge difference.

This isn't my fish but I just sprung for a royal gramma. The one I got was a little beat up by the other fish at the store but the fins will grow back. The colors REALLY pop out under my T-5 lights and this fish is a people watcher. Great fish.

I miss my SW Tank - I want to get a nano tank this time.

This is my tank when I went from 180Gal to 55Gal
