I am going to get certified here, but I am wondering if I could bear and enjoy the cold water. Is the water get warm at Monterey during summer ?

IMHO. I want to die every time I get into the water here in California. I'm suprised life exists in these waters. With that said, I still love it. Don't wait for Summer as it only gets about 5-6 degrees warmer. Get your cert now and start diving with us ;)

You get used to it. My semidry suit is good to about 50F at 60 feet. Any colder or deeper and I start to get cold but usually at about the same time I've used up my air so it's time to come to the surface anyway. The worst part about diving in winter in Monterey is getting out of the water...that's when I start to shiver.

If you shore dive from Monastery be prepared for the monastery berries. ;) You'll know what I mean after you dive there once or twice.

Yea I said F the whole cold thing and became a drysuit diver instead. I've dived Monastery a few times and have no clue what the Monastery berries are :|

I did my open water dive in Monterey this past December in the rain. Being in the water was tolerable in a 7mm suit, getting out of the water was a miserable experience. Just make sure to bring a towel and a sweater to keep you warm while you're on the surface.

They are those little pebbles that get into your gear. Maybe it's a term only used by a few of us.

I had a small leak in my dry suit the last time I did a night dive in Monterey and I only lasted about 15 minutes in the water before I had to surface and get out. I sold that suit after getting it repaired. I will eventually buy another suit but the next one won't be an entry level one.

What was the brand? I've yet to get flushed and I save up my pee for the time it happens. :p

It was a Bare but I don't remember the model. I paid just under $700 for it back in 2005, so it wasn't even one of their better ones. I sold it in 2008 for $200.

Yeah, you get cold really fast when that water starts coming in!

Speaking of peeing in your drysuit, I've seen divers wear adult diapers cuz they can't hold their pee long enough. :laughing

This suit has done me well so far, but that's only counting about 7 dives this year. I didn't get the P-valve instead, but luckily haven't had any issues. The wife has got me on a super-saver budget so I won't upgrading any gear anytime soon :'(

With that said.. who's up for diving next weekend?

I'd go if I was still in the bay area. It's been over 2.5 years now since my last dive so it would be wise for me to sign up for a refresher course. I think I'll get that scheduled here in the next couple of weeks because I really miss diving.

After reading all the posts here, it would be wise for me to get certified in Asia.
The only time I swam in the State was at Yosemite during summer, and I was only in the water for only 10 mins. When I got out of the water, I barely felt anything. :(

Thumb up to all you guys diving in the winter :thumbup

It's really not that bad. You are only cold for the first few minutes until your body warms up the suit. The suit has to get wet first before it's able to insulate you. As soon as you're underwater kicking you'll be fine. Just make sure you have a decent pair of gloves because your hands are the hardest part of your body to keep warm.

WHAT!?! No way. Get certified here. I was a Divemaster in Asia (Thailand, Indonesia, Fiji, Malaysia) and I'll say this... I wouldn't dive with 80% of the divers I saw in the courses over there. I believe that the shops that teach divers here are held to a much higher standard than the Open Water Factories of Asia. My :2cents .

Come dive with us :p You won't regret it. We have soo much fun in the water - warm or cold.

Totally agree! My last gf got her open water and later advanced dive cert in Philippines and she was pretty much clueless on dives. I had to keep an eye on her because she would never look at her air or pay attention to her dive computer to know how much bottom time she had left. The drift dive we did in Boracay where we went to 150' was because she just decided to start diving down and down and down trying to take pics of sharks! Me and one of the dive masters were swimming after her when she suddenly stopped and turned around to see us waving our arms. When we finally got back to the boat I checked her dive computer and it showed she went to 156'. My dive computer showed 148'. We were only to have gone down a maximum of 130'. As a result, it took us longer to ascend (because the dive computer would start flashing if we tried to ascend at the same rate as the rest of the dive party) and we had a longer safety stop. It's a good thing I didn't decide to dive NOX that dive.

You are better off getting certified in the winter here IMO, less kelp to tangle with & you get the rating of HARD CORE on your padi card (j/k on the second one)

RE: Diving this weekend, since they are hosting Mavericks on sunday, the wave patten is probably not so go for diving.

Thank you Anthony and BLU. After some thinking I change my mind, and will do the OW here :teeth

Which one do you prefer regarding the two below ?
They are local, and I am thinking of going with the cheaper choice, unless I am convinced otherwise.

$300 http://www.aquaticdiscovery.com/index.html
$350 http://www.diverdans.com/

No worries. My favourite shop in the Bay Area is: http://www.anywater.com/ .

Lots of good people in there. A few of the locals who go there even let me try out some of their really expensive gear, before I bought anything! That sold me. Oh and if you do sign up, let me know when and I'll volunteer to be your Divemaster on the trip.

Hey! I'm free the 26-27th (Sat,Sun) of this month. Want to dive both days? I'll find us a sweet deal for a place to crash for the night.

Let's see if we can get 4 people together and do Pt Lobos.

I can't remember if I've dove Pt. Lobos. Is that near butterfly cathedral???

When I had a boat I did some dives about a mile or so off of the launch ramp, looking for these train cars in about 70' of water. We couldn't find them but we did find some wheels from the carriage. The water was dark and like pea soup and the current was very strong in parts. After that dive I went out and bought a nice dive reel. ;)
