SCUBA / Diving / Diving license

The place I got my cert has closed unfortunately. But I didn't find Monterey bay too horrible. Just make sure you use gloves and booties. The gloves, compass, and mask were the only things not included in the package price for my school. Fortunately, I borrowed some nice gloves, and that made a nice difference. (had my suit zipper open up, and could tell very quickly what a difference the covering was making!)

And for better or worse... a nice cup of hot chocolate before and after my dives! :teeth

the required gear you have to buy yourself befor class is...

Snorkel, mask, gloves, boots and fins. What is the visiblity like? I feel like that might be one of the biggest things Ill need to get over. Not being able to see.

My classes start May 18th :banana ocean dives May 26th and 27th. and just realized Im doing it on memorial day weekend. So no work Monday :teeth

Had my first scuba experience in Oahu last Friday... :banana

Found a coupon on Travelzoo.com for a scuba experience for unlicensed divers ($59). Sat through a short class, went over all the instructions, and completed two 45 minute dives down to 40 feet. I think I picked up a new hobby, time to get certified. :teeth:teeth:teeth

As told to me by the diver instructors, the visibility on the days were were diving was about average. So with that as a reference....
It was like walking around on a typical foggy morning. "you can see across the street... but you're not going to see any real detail over there" and as thing get closer, they get clearer.

Ah ok that makes sense. probably feels a bit eerie when you are down there for the first time being that the ocean is so vast and you can only see 20ft in front of you..

So i just got my pay check. NATURALLY I want to buy all my gear for class this weekend. Anyone know a good diving store in or around Oakland? I dont want to go all the way to Santa Clara just yet. :)

I think it's a good deal.

Good order to buy gear:

1. Fins + Mask
2. Wetsuit
3. Computer
4. Regs
5. BCD
6. Accessories.

As for this set of regs, I think it's a decent deal. Oceanic is a pretty decent brand in the US. I'm an Aqualung guy, because that's what everyone uses out here in the Pacific Regions.

Kim I got a hook up on gear for you if you are interested. Vis. Really depends on the day, it can be down to 1 foot or can be 70feet. Usually related to how much sun the plankton had available to grow.

Lobos in June might be really overgrown with kelp but a buddy and I are down.

P.S. Kim do you know who your instructors are?

Sweet dmitry! I'll may ask you about that. Ive got a mask fins boots snorkel. My instructor is Paul miller at diver dans.

I'd be interested as well....

Does this mean I get to see Kim in a bikini??

When you looking to do your course Rel? I'm going to try to volunteer on weekends over at Any Water Sports in SJ in June.

Are you certified Rel? If not take the class with me! Im going by myself so I have to do the buddy stuff with a stranger. :( :p

I got certed in '09, need to get requal'd. Got seven charged tanks ready for dunking... :thumbup

Just finished my pool sessions this weekend. Holy exhausting. I slept like a baby after both days. Its alot of work! But It was also ALOT of fun. Never paniced and never had to popedp up to the surface. Actually that isnt true. When he had to take out masks off and replace and clear. As soon as I took it off I inhaled a bit through my nose and choked. :laughing But that was in the shallow end and I never did it after that. But other then that I made it through all the drills decently. Some people in my class this was not the case.

I also lucked out because only 3 of the 11 are going to Monterey next weekend. Just so happens that the others are doing a different weekend or are diving else where. SO my instructor said that since we will get through our drills fairly quickly we can actually go explore a bit which we wouldnt be able to do otherwise. :banana

I certified and also did rescue, night and dry suit at the now defunct Wallins in RC. My daughter got her cert onher 10th bday, bless her heart. So funny...the tank was bigger than her. I ended up using a 30 for her. She did it at Bamboo reef in SF. One word of advice...if you plan on diving locally forget the wetsuit and get a dry suit......soo much better. Everybody i dive with owns a wet suit tbat just hangs in the closet.
