just wait till you do the mask replace kneeling on the bottom in 50-ish degree water...it's a real smack in the face! :laughing
Yeaaaaaaa Im alil nervous about that. We are doing a total of 4 dives next weekend. I know the water is gonig to be freezing IM just hoping the weather will be HOT.
I certified and also did rescue, night and dry suit at the now defunct Wallins in RC. My daughter got her cert onher 10th bday, bless her heart. So funny...the tank was bigger than her. I ended up using a 30 for her. She did it at Bamboo reef in SF. One word of advice...if you plan on diving locally forget the wetsuit and get a dry suit......soo much better. Everybody i dive with owns a wet suit tbat just hangs in the closet.

I dont know how your daughter managed to carry all that gear! My shoulders and chest are SO sore and achy from all that stuff. I even have broken blood vessels on each of my shoulders from the shoulder straps rubbing.

But man im stoked. I dont know how much ill get in to diving so Im not going to invest in any gear just yet. :)

Good decision. I splurged on gear and later found out I would rarely (once a year) go diving. Sold everything except my mask and snorkel and bought a underwater camera instead.

If you think it was a pain in the ass just carrying the gear to/from the pool area, you're in for a treat in monterey!! lol....its gonna be a MUCH longer trek to the water from where all your stuff/gear is gonna be set up.

The important lesson that I've learned from that trip - Opt for boat diving if its an option :laughing

a second, and perhaps more important lesson (that someone else was taught) is that before you go in the water, have the vest inflated, mask on, and reg in the mouth....unless you want to experience (possibly) being face down in 6-12 inches of water with all the gear on your back....(funny mental image)

We dont have a boat option. All of our dives are beach entry which I think is kinda cool. Its easy to jump off a boat :laughing Im already not excited about having all the stuff on and having to walk but I mean we did pool work for about 6hrs and probably spend a total of 2 hrs actually underwater. The rest was standing around listening to directions or waiting for everyone else to get through the skills.

I had already decided to have my gear ready to go I dont wanna fall and start to drown. Falling down is embrassing enough I dont need to be practically dying and choking :laughing.

Im STOKED!!! :banana :party

I'd be interested as well....

Does this mean I get to see Kim in a bikini??

I'll ask kim what she is looking to get tonight, 1 order kind of deal so if the timing is good for both of you then we'll make it happen

How to optimize your air consumption and overall diving experience:

1) Stay fit. Exercise. Carrying tanks, and gear is a part of the lifestyle :p
2) Hydrate yourself. (1L of water before every dive)
3) Relax

Holy freeezing water! But I did it. Pass with flying colors. What an absolutely amazing weekend. 2 MAJOR pluses. ONE the beach was not nearly as crowded as it usually is. TWO. because we only had 3 people in our class we got to explore the ocean after doing each of our skills. In fact we got through them so quickly and effortlessly. That our very last dive was "removing and replacing your mask" followed by an adventure dive. The viz was HORRIBLE but it was sooooo cool none the less. I cant wait to jump back in. :banana :banana

YES!!!! IN! :banana Be nice to dive and see more then 10ft in front of me. My last dive was about 5ft viz :laughing

Pfft, you're talking to the guy who just came in from 70m viz in The Similans :p

I can never drink a lot of water before a dive. It makes me pee like crazy and yes I have tried to pee in the wetsuit but I just can't do it! LOL!

Next time, try :p I always remind my students or discover divers to drink a small bottle of water before each dive.

When I was doing my Assistant Instructor course in Australia, our Course Director said that of the cases of DCI he saw/heard of, all of them admitted to not properly hydrating themselves before each dive.

"Avoid Dehydration to Avoid the Bends
Dehydration, where the cells in the body don’t have adequate amount of fluid, means less places for the nitrogen to be absorbed. This leads to a concentration of nitrogen in certain areas that will result in nitrogen being released quicker and possibly in larger bubbles.

The other problem with dehydration is that the body will not be functioning at its best. As above, a scuba dive within decompression depths and times requires the body to be operating at its optimum."

I'll set up a BARF event to dive here next:

I don't check this thread very often but put me on the interested list. I'm a pretty good dive buddy. I've got a couple hundred dives under my belt mostly in cold water conditions. I'm not a dive master by any means but have a fair amount of experience and training.

Edit: Congrats Kim! Welcome to another expensive, gear-centric hobby :p

Awesome. You can help me lead :)

Thanks Bill! Gear wise is definitely like motorcycling. Shit is expensive! But you only have to buy it once. Im going to rent for a few more times then think about investing in my own gear. :)

Ant if you set it up and think Ben and I are fairly interested. I do know he wants to take me to the channel islands as well.

I got about ummmm 4 dives under my belt? :laughing I dont even know if they count.

I know a few other certified peeps that might be interested as well.

HAHAHA!! What moto gear have you only bought once? FWIW I don't think I have ever bought new scuba gear. Well, maybe knives and lights but the big stuff I've always gotten (barely) used.

The channel islands are a fun trip. Check out the "truth" boats. They leave from Santa Barbara Harbor. Customer service is top notch.

Note: You only need to buy gear once, but you have to service it every other year or every 50 dives.

kk. Let me see what weekends I have open. What months are best for you guys? August is perfect for me.

lol, the open water dives don't count ya dork :p Want to go to Monterey next weekend? We'll get two dives in at Breakwater or something.
