SCUBA / Diving / Diving license

I think we need an Advanced Diver course though before this trip. This will be the most SCUBA intensive trip we've ever taken and we want to come back in one piece. We're real casual divers and haven't even been out on 'our own' before.

Thanks for that. We bought a couple of them already with a nice deal from Yakoo. Any recommendations on where to take an Advanced course? I want to take Rescue Diver, but you need Advanced before that, right?

Yup, Advanced > EFR > Rescue Course.

Advanced Course is just fun, simply said. If they don't already have something set in stone, do the: Peak Performance Buoyancy, Underwater Navigator, and Search and Rescue activities included in the program.

Go to Any Water Sports in San Jose ;) They're good people. I just joined Global Underwater Explorers and we all use Any Water Sports as our "home" shop in the South Bay.

I just finished up my divemaster in Koh Tao, Thailand a few months back. If anybody wants to go dive Monterey or Point Lobos let me know! its on my list of things i have to do!

Here's a pic of some of the dudes i was lucky enough to get share the water with out in the Gulf while I was there. Unreal!

I've never met soo many aggro fish, than my time in Koh Tao! Triggerfish that attack you every chance they get. *shakes fist*

Did you get a chance to dive the Phuket or Phi Phi areas? Next time you're out that way, ask a few guides to take you to Hin Daeng and Hin Muang. I've never seen soo many Giant Moorays, Breaching Mantas -- whilst dealing with some amazing currents that make you feel like you're flying.

Doing a DM program in a place with so many triggers turned into a game. we'd all go out and try to get attacked. people ended up with stitches in their heads. No diving in Phi Phi or the Similans (it was off season) unfortunately. Im itching to get back into the water ATM...

You up for another course? I'm talking to GUE about allowing me to join the Tech Diver 1+ Course w/out taking their pre-requisites, and could use a buddy.

im definitely down for some tech diving. almost got into it over there. pricey stuff, and would be cold as FACK at 50+ meters out here... PM me with timing if you're really looking into it.

i really want to get some CCR and Full Facemask dives in. Got a chance to try both on and even play around with the full face (with 2 way mic) in our dive pool. Really weird sensation talking and listening underwater. cant help but laugh. would be awesome to incorporate into a system for those just learning to dive.

Interesting... do you have a drysuit out here? I only have a 7mm hooded and I freeze my ass off anything below 40m.

I cant wait for our wedding to be over so we can finally start saving up for weekend dive trips. I have been certified for 7mos and havent been diving once. :(

I recently went swimming in lake tahoe not as cold as I thought! definitely be warmer than Monterey. brrrrr I heard there are some cool wall diving spots there.

Anthony, I'm thinking of selling my BARE drysuit if you're interested. I haven't taken it out in a few months but its all fresh, clean, and properly wrapped up in its drybag.

That doesn't sound wise.

Why do you guys want to get into technical diving? How many cold water dives do you have under your belts?

That doesn't sound wise.

The entire course is a simple overview for the AI Course I've already taken with PADI. Granted, if anyone that hasn't been through a Divemaster or AI internship - then this course can turn average divers into above average divers.

I've done 20+ penetration dives, 5 cavern dives, and over 30 dives 40m+ - with over half of my total dives using O2+ Mixes. My friends are Navy divers in AUS and the amount of training/know-how they've done sounds incredible. Since there's no way I'm joining the Navy, the equivalent to this training is Tech Diving.

I've actually only had 2 cold-water dives. All my dives have been in +15*C water.

Who is filling your tanks? What do you mean O2+mixes? Are you talking Nitrox or Trimix? I am assuming you don't have cert.s in these, correct? Penetration dives? Are you talking overhead environment? Do you have redundancy? Have been trained for this?

Yeah, IMO you don't have enough experience. Get a *lot* more dives in first. Start with dry suit specialty, if you're getting cold.

If your doing this with your Navy friends, then they are not your friends.

Draw from your motorcycle knowledge, in terms of when the shit hits the fan. What happens? You do what you practice. (e.g., intinctively counter-steering, etc.) Same thing happens in diving, excepect the consequences are far greater. I've known 5 times as many people dying from technical diving than motorcycle related deaths.

I'm just trying to help. Please, don't get dead.

1. You assume far too much.

  • My tanks are always filled and verified by myself.
  • Nitrox
  • I have Certs that cover Encriched Air, and Wreck
  • Yes, overhead environment.
  • I carry a pony-bottle in overhead environments.
  • GUE Tech 1 is training for this ^. The rig is required prior to taking the course.

2. You don't know who my friends are, or what advice has been given to me.
3. You assume you know my diving experience / training.
4. If you read the thread, you would see I've inquired about a drysuit above.
5. As an AI/Divemaster, I've had to assist in real rescue situations in 3rd world countries. I've also been able to handle 1 emergency situation that more-than-likely saved my own life. I'd never put myself into a situation where a contingency wasn't in place.

By reading the thread you could've gathered a lot of this info.

I know you're only trying to help, and stressing that Tech diving is a sure-fire way to increase the chances of not coming home one day. You're 100% correct in that regard. This is why I want to be formally trained in it. If it ends up not being for me, hey.. at least I'll have a nice rec rig set up for some awesome bottom time :thumbup

Not assuming, just asking questions. Knock yourself out. My opinion remains.

However, if you would like a second opinion on gear, etc. Feel free to PM me.

Actually, I do have a few questions that I think some other people could benefit from as well.

I really enjoy Wreck Diving. I dived with a few members of the Discovery Channel and were able to penetrate the SS Yongala, and SS Adelaide a while back. By far the most exciting dives I've ever done. So ideally, that's what I'd like to do more.

For most overhead environments, I've read that the sidemounted rigs would better suit these situations. Other than the necessities of the rig itself, what options/accessories should I also consider when building this rig?

Note: I've been looking into Hollis Gear which looks to be favored.

Gonna go get wet! Getting ready to fly to the big island of Hawaii and I'm gonna do some diving there w00t! Probably nothing hairy like overhead or caves or wrecks but might get a little deep and look for something tasty!

I'll mostly shore dive but will hit at least one charter with the sandwich isle divers. I've dove with them before and like their vibe. Small boat captain owns the boat and dive shop. Cool dude.

w00t! Hoping to have a drysuit ready for me in the next few weeks. Want to hit up some local diving when you get back?

btw.. take pics or video if you can! I've never dived Hawaii before.
