Shadow banning

Are their free speech rights being infringed upon? :dunno

If I have a history of 5 years of posting and interacting with all other members on a platform, then get shadow banned with no notice or other sign that I am no longer participating, I believe my speech is being restricted.

TOS be damned, contracts cannot sign away rights. We will see where this goes :)

You don't have rights on private platforms.

Currently, users may not have legal protection against free speech infringement online, but you bet your ass it hurts the platform as a whole when the fuckery behind the scenes becomes public knowledge

Like it or not its true tho. Forums are private affairs. You don't have a right to free speech on them. No one is stopping you from posting anything you want on your own forum. I don't like the practice either but I think it has its place.

hmm. maybe one that doesn't infringe on free speech rights. ban their ip. use algorithm to match typing style if they go to vpn.

BE UPFRONT ABOUT IT. TELL THE FUCKTARD THEY ARE BANNED FROM THE PLATFORM

Partially agree, the flip side is it's normally the childish folks that get banned. Those same people you were just honest with are now making new accounts.

You may have some interesting ideas about government, but I can tell you, online platforms aren't them.

It's the role of the TOS, as enforced by the moderators, to establish a set of guidelines for participants to shape the discussion for the topic of the forum and create a pleasant experience for its users, as a majority. As an example, I am a member of a 3d printing group on FaceBook. It has a few simple rules of conduct, the biggest one is that there is zero discussion of politics in that group. The member base is from all over the country, and the world, and any discussion of political beliefs would spiral out of control, fast. SO they take a hardline policy on it. I know that if I want to discuss politics (I don't) there are plenty of places to go do that. If you want a place to go talk about whatever you want to talk about, unfettered by rules, maybe check out 4chan.

You should really brush up on your "rights".

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Kind of a critical word there--CONGRESS. It popped right up in a Google search, like page 1, hit 1. It doesn't say that my knitting forum needs to allow jackasses to publish pictures of their junkpile in the kids' section of the board.

Know that I typically like the idea of being able to say what I want at any time or place. However, I get that their are limitations, even within this amazing right.

You seem to wobble back and forth on what free speech rights are (or at least how you use the term), but I have a feeling you know.

I'll kick you out of my house if you say the wrong word too many times and freeze peach has nothing to do with that either.

Serious? you want to devote time and energy to develop a unique markov chain for every single troll on your platform? Because that's all you'll ever do, forever. And you'll still end up banning them, which to your opinion infringes on free speech.

Rule #1 of online conduct: don't wast time on assholes. Don't waste money either.

That's totally fine and within your rights. Instead of kicking them out, shadow banning is like if you had a way to push a mute button on a remote so no one hears their voice but them. Passive aggressive much? :laughing just kick the asshole out

It sounds like you would need to code it yourself, is there not an aws run api that can grab the post history and process looking for duplicate accounts?

Again, I have no problem with banning people. Banning is refusal of entry. Shadow banning is not banning. Shadow banning is censorship.

I agree with this. However, shadow banning effectively prevents someone in a crowded theater from shouting 'FIRE!' even if there is one. Ban them if they yell 'FIRE!' when there is no fire. Do that by refusing entry at the door. Don't put an invisible muzzle on them :thumbdown

The big picture is very concerning. Barf and other forums are not an issue. There is evidence that Google and Twitter, et al, have political biases and those biases are influencing their services. Considering the overall influence Google has on everything, this is spooky. While the U.S. had no problem regulating and breaking up AT&T, we seem too reluctant to watch our ass with the internet. I don't like what I see right now. And I don't like being tracked every damn place that I go on line.

What if the asshole re-spawned in your living room ever 20 minutes?

After the asshole sneaks back in a few times wearing a disguise, he gets the invisible muzzle.
Don't like being muzzled? Stop sneaking in and saying shitty things.

This I do agree is very concerning.

then string him up and make an example of him :laughing muzzle and all

Fair point :)

I guess you've missed the part where I explained, numerous times, that shadow banning is a tool you use against people that have already been banned multiple times.
