So, racism by Starbucks or just two guys who wouldn't buy a cup of coffee?

The manager aluded to just "following a written memo" regarding that particular Starbucks. I'm assuming that the memo was in regards to people that don't buy shit and want to use the restroom and hang out. They mentioned it once that I heard, then didn't mention it again.

Only regarding behavior and not race:

Is there any data that shows how many laptop/phone/bag thieves bought something in the coffee shop before stealing or did most just enter, loiter or use the facilities, scope out their victims and grab/run?

Anyone here ever had their possessions stolen by a grab and run criminal while in a coffee shop and what do you think of stores trying to keep out loiterers?

I must be a fucking weirdo. cus when I go to a coffee shop it's to buy coffee, not to hang out on my laptop.
I'm actually interested in getting good coffee which seems to be contrary to the business plan of most coffee shops.

I rarely buy anything. And I often stay for several hours. Never been asked to buy something in any of them, either in SF or in East Bay.

I guess English is hard for you. Can't get any more clear of my intent of the use of the word when I post the definition.

The world is not as literal as you are trying to make it.

It's remarkable how far you will reach to assure yourself this wasn't a racially motivated event, despite all of the evidence to indicate that it is.

I had an ex that loved hanging at the coffee shop so I kinda got into it also.
It works for daytime socializing but it didn't have the same feel as a place to hang after sundown.
Problem is I don't drink coffee and sitting there sucking on a warm Odwalla orange juice gets a bit weird.

The issue is my white ass could probably hang out at the Starbucks in question all afternoon without buying anything and nobody would say word one to me.

Back in the day, I used to wait for a blind date at the Starbucks. Once I waited 20 minutes and my date texted me not to get a coffee because he wanted to buy my drink. I don’t recall anyone asking me any questions or giving me the stink eye. Obviously, YMMV :sarcasm

I see it as the opposite, because it's every Starbucks policy, and see zero racial motivation, because it's been enforced that way for decades. If you haven't bought anything to enjoy the facility, what entitles you to stay? What evidence is there that it was racially motivated?

You are the one reaching here. They refused to leave, should the police have just thrown up their arms and left?

They probably could have too, but they asked to use the bathroom, and were caught, loitering for all intents and purposes. Asking to use the bathroom is what got them caught.

how dare they get all uppity and ask to use a restroom

then shouldn't they be called wifi hang outs so people interested in coffee could differentiate them from coffee shops

Looking at the join dates of just about everyone posting here, I’m guessing this went over all of your heads....

Fantastic irony of this conversation.

I know this is the sink and none of us actually ride motorcycles here in the KS.

But the way back days when BARF was in its infancy...any of you OGs remember what was a popular thing to do every week? I think it was Thursday evenings. Snellbucks anyone?

Back when BARF was just getting going, the South Bay contingent (which most of it was since that’s where it started I believe) would meet and hang out, loiter if I may, for hours one night a week. At a Starbucks.

I don’t remember anyone getting kicked out for not immediately buying something or if anything at all.

Every Starbuck's policy? Since when? I frequent 10-12 different ones, and sit around for several hours without buying anything.

Either you guys are lying, or you dress/act like homeless scrubs and that's why you're getting asked to buy something.

+1. I don't frequent them at all any more, but when I did, I'd never seen anyone get kicked out not ordering... and there's plenty of people (including myself) who would chill and not order for a while.

We used to do SFVBike night at a Starbucks, but the police would always show up and kick us out, because we were loitering/trespassing. STVBike Night is no longer.

I call complete and utter bullshit of the highest order.
I'll bet you a crisp one hundred dollar bill that I can go sit in any Starbucks of your choosing without buying a thing and sit on my ass for more than ten minutes.

I have never (NEVER) been asked to leave a Starbucks.

EVER.

Yeah, we're all a bunch of homeless smelly dirty liars.

It's not hard to understand. Buy something, or leave. If you don't want to buy something, don't ask to use the bathroom and get noticed, so you aren't asked to leave. Then, don't refuse to leave when told to do so.

What obliges any business to allow non patrons to stay? What do you think would have happened if say, this was a TGIF's, and they had walked in and sat down at a table, "no thanks, we're not ordering any food or drinks, we're just meeting someone." They'd have been asked to leave just the same, and when they refused, they outcome would have been trespassing citations.

It also doesn't matter that you got one over on Starbucks. You weren't noticed. The facilities (including the seats inside), are for the use of paying customers. They had every right to tell them to get out, and they had no grounds to refuse to leave. When they refused to follow the orders of the LEO's, they did nothing wrong with cuffing them, and releasing them on their OR. Not being charged doesn't mean that they didn't do anything wrong either. It means the DA and Starbucks doesn't want the PR nightmare. Doing "Unconscious Racial Bias Training" is also a PR stunt, trying to fend off the SJW's. That you can't see that means you're blind to what just happened.

I'm absolutely gobsmacked over all of this. Look at the facts.

"Leave."

"No."

"We're calling the police."

Police show up.

"Leave, or you'll be arrested."

"No."

"Okay, you're under arrest."
