Based on the terrain and the fact you were headed east.. I'd guess Westwater or therabouts.


(still pissed that you got dumped on while going thru CO... my home state is SUPPOSED tobe more hospitable to visitors... ah well... perhaps you can get some more pics on the way back.)

God I hate those fucking things.

Walked out to my rental car after a sudden rainstorm in Plano TX, and the parking lot was COVERED with fat brown crickets. And I mean covered. You could see tire tracks where'd they'd gotten squished.

Deac, I gotta admit, that was the worst (so far) and most fun/memorable (so far) part of the trip.

I'm heading up 70...getting some rain, no big deal. Something hits my arm...and HURTS through my rain gear and my leathers, then I'm getting pounded! GAHHHH! HAIL!

I tucked and endured it, finally it let up and started raining again, next thing I know I'm spraying through huge puddles of mud! I keep going, screw the speed limit, passing cars, trucks etc.

As we start to climb I pull off and stuff some heat packs into my gloves, figure I'll need them.

We keep going up, the gloves are kinda warm, still going up, getting kinda cold.

We come around a turn and I look up and see the snow covered peaks...made me shiver.

Still climbing, I see a sign that says something like "Tunnel ahead", I think "Cool, this isn't bad, the tunnel must be right nearby"...WRONG!

So we keep going "Where is this tunnel?", I'm wiping rain from my faceshield, suddenly it isn't rain, stuff is sticking...."Oh shit...snow" Then it starts getting worse....then MUCH worse...then my face shield goes white, I can't see anything. I scrub at it, but it has a layer of ice on it. I whip up the shield and start feeling the pain as the sub-freezing wind, and the pounding snow hits me.

The road is full of huge ruts and potholes to boot, so I'm getting slammed around, sliding all over, praying I don't go down and have a truck run my ass over.

One image stands out in my mind, and I wish I had a photo to show. We come around a turn, and I'm yelling "WHERE THE HELL IS THE TUNNEL!" I look ahead through the turn and just see a some trees and road fading into white, with those menacing, yet beautiful peaks above it all.

Was scared shitless at the moment, but afterwards...Damn, that was awesome.

Oh yeah, at that temperature, the heatpacks didn't do squat...I couldn't move my thumbs for some time afterwards :laughing

so, the question is, did the weather change on the far side of the Eisenhower? Every time I've gone through, it did. It's bizarre....



And yah, you got serious balls to ride over Loveland in the snow. When it gets bad, they start posting chain advisories. Me, I'd have pulled off at Dillon and nursed a quart of hot cider first, just to bolster my courage... or poured it into a camelbak, hoping it didn't melt or leak...

hey valgar, how are the timax gloves in the extreme temps? you already said that they were freezing in the cold even with hand warmers, but i dont any glove would have been warm there. but i dont know, you tell me.

also, how are they in the heat, and how are they for long distance riding?
 
Nice pics, Valgar! My friend and I just did what looks like the same trip on his new SV650 last week. We took Rt 50 most of the way, and super-slabbed it on the last leg through Ohio and PA. We split the ride up between the bike and the Penske rental truck with all his worldly belongings :) I'm working on a writeup and waiting to combine our pictures.

Is there another post of yours with the route you took (are taking?)? I'd be curious to see where we overlapped.
