I was served by Mr. Peet himself back in the 70s at the Vine St, store. He was a very white Dutch dude. I love to tell the story so thanks. I worked at groovy Walnut Square in those days. It was former Peet's employess who started Starbucks on his model and obviously exceeded that model in terms of corporate success.
Srsly, I will say this. On the one hand, this desire to be politically correct and get all into "process" makes me want t retch. On the other hand, the fact that this corporation is trying to engage people in something more than providing a service comes at a time when so many of us feel powerless in their grasp. By participating, you can either see it as being a useful idiot while they make money, OR, more positively, somehow contributing to better human communication and values. I think its somewhere in between...
The reason is that, for better or worse, Starbucks have managed to become a town plaza of sorts in many places, where conversations pertinent to the local communities take place. To me, its an interesting phenom. It would be disingenuous to deny that this is taking place. I would prefer they talk about climate change or just about anything besides the super-charged race topic, though.....
