Stock Thread 2018

Ernie - what about the international tech stocks: Tencent, Alibaba, etc. I am reading those are expected to catch up in 2018 and perform similar to our big 4/5 here in the US did in 2017..

I don't buy individual stocks for the most part. There are a couple international funds that are pretty nice.

IDV is one of my faves with a nice dividend. Beware international stock volatility, IMHO>

SCHE ( emerging markets) has been killer for me, and it's a Schwab ETF, no commission and very low fees.

Remember, I'm on the ass end of the investing spectrum, you're at the early midpoint of yours. Our needs are different.

in my outside of ROTH/IRA/retirement accounts I no longer invest in flash in the pants stuff.

anything I might need to sell in less than a year hurts when I file taxes every april.

1/3 of my retirement is in a 401k type account. limited to a menu of funds. this stuff is growing like weeds. 20% in 2016, 18% 2017, maybe more this year!

2/3 is in IRA and ROTH where I can invest in individual stocks. none of this is in ETF or funds.

Learned that a married couple if collectively have an adjusted gross income of over $190k CANNOT contribute to a roth IRA.

Sooo....in a 8 months when I get married my Roth will cease funding.

Any ideas on what to do? Fiance and I plan on meeting a financial planner soon.

I was going to contribute $2k into it but may hold off now.

Don't file jointly.

Yup. You'll do great, Dennis. I have zero doubt.

Lots of corp money coming into the economy next years. Hundreds of billions.

It has been doing good so far. 2018 will be amazing year then before it takes a shit. I hope so.

I figure this year to finish out Dow 27,000 or so. We'll probably get some enthusiasm, but I don't expect it to be anything like the Trump anticipation and tax cut anticipation.

I've never been wrong before. :rofl:rofl xxx

anyone own shares of Berkshire Hathaway?

When I was younger, I used to think, when I have enough money, I'm going to buy shares so that I can be rich like Warren Buffet! (riding on the coatails of WB) :laughing

There are Class A and Class B shares now.
BRK-A is $297,920/shr! :wow
BRK-B is an affordable $198/shr

Holding BRK-B. Playing BRK-A is a rich man's game. Why not just buy bitcoins? :teeth

Just jibing at ya @Dubbs Keeping with thread subject, check out GBTC... it's as crazy as BTC with the ease of using established brokers to trade. My buddy and I have played it a bit.

i said when i was younger i thought i could automatically turn rich by riding on a rich man's coattails. i am young no more and not willing to lose my savings on volatile stuff

GTBC huh? Bitcoin Investment Trust.

i have been following the bitcoin thread discussion, reading up on the subject independently and have been checking crypto prices on https://coinmarketcap.com ...
it's just not for me but i like sitting on the sidelines and watching

Remember that GBTC is a trust, issues a K1, and you will have a small shit ton of paperwork at tax time.

all your predictions out the window if rocket boy launch an antique nuke at us!

I'm wondering what happens to Apple if they do bring a ton of cash back from offshore and dump it into a stock buyback. I'm not that confident in buying more of an almost trillion dollar company but these guys are still valued way lower than most tech.

Why would Apple do that?

Why would Apple do that?

Does the new tax plan allow an exemption from bringing overseas cash back at a low tax rate/ At least there was a lot of talk about that proposal. Apple has a history of buybacks. What Else are they likely to to with that pile of cash they're sitting on?

A. Stock buyback.
B. Special dividend

Either of those would kick the stock price further up.

You guys are wrong. They will raise employee salary's and hope more people! :laughing

https://www.fool.com/investing/gene...le-chart-that-captures-the-magic-of-appl.aspx

Companies purchase their stock back to decrease the amount of dilution on the open Market. The more shares a company has in their treasury, they bigger weapon they have against a hostile takeover. Look at Apples' chart; they were diluting their share value from 06 to 13' at a massive rate; likely due to the intense growth they were experiencing and needing to keep up with. Eventually, they HAVE to bring those shares back in in house.

This is true for most companies, especially during the recessionary years. They sold stock to finance operations and keep people employed. When they experience moments flush with cash, they will repurchase shares to protect the firm. This is all very normal.

You guys are wrong. They will raise employee salary's and hope more people! :laughing

Technically, with an employee stock plan they're doing just that. Most of the companies have employee stock plans, but I don't know if Apple does.

has anyone read the bitcoin thread lately??

Dubbington, the OP of this stock thread is now a new convert!

Good luck, Dubbington!
