Stock Thread 2018

Just for shits and giggles for the sake of conversation and without suggesting what anyone should do, Buffett sees a bright future in AAPL. I’m not going to second guess him on that one it’s one of my most comfortable to hold stocks. Of course the economy could take a dump and drag everything down but I’m playing it as though things are going to keep on keeping on for the next little while.

Going to invest a good portion of my savings into the market and let it ride for about 2 years. Hoping by then, I'll have a good amount of money to put a down payment for a small home. Question is, what sort of other investments should I consider that would give me a decent return without having to pay a buttload of taxes when I withdrawl. So far I'm only thinking about investing in the market. I'm looking at FB, BABA, BIDU, CRM, WB, MU, V, MA, or BA.
At first I was thinking I should just invest in some ETF's like VHDYX, SCHV, VIHIX, FSIVX, SCHD, VOO, or SPY as long term investment. Would be great if I could get some advice on what you would do or what you think? Thanks.

Warren Buffett: "If you don't follow the market, don't have time to build a portfolio, then buy VOO. You won't regret it." (Well that's a paraphrase, but it's what he said.)

I own SCHD, SCHX, SCHV, SCHE, and ADX, my perennial favorite. Everyone should own some ADX. It's so unknown.

Warren also admits he doesn't know tech. I won't own Apple at today's level. Of course, if I had kept the 500 shares I bought at 14, I'd be living in Hawaii.

yup

https://www.kiplinger.com/article/investing/T030-C008-S001-warren-buffett-why-index-funds-trump-hedge-funds.html

"... the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) charges the same 0.04%, and the Vanguard 500 Index Fund Investor Shares (VFINX) charges a still-meager 0.14%.

“Warren Buffett has recommended that when he is no longer here, his wife should invest 90% of her money in a low-cost S&P 500 index fund such as that offered by Vanguard. The other 10% would be invested in Treasuries to provide liquidity,” Kass says."

Not the typical high valuation, low earnings tech company. It can be argued as if they are any longer predominantly a tech company.
I have around 500 shares, its not enough to move to Hawaii. Unless your number is not adjusted for splits.

Yes, that was 500 shares then, not sure what it is now.

I am sure the transaction will go smoothly for you, rodr!

You're one of the most mature and level-headed posters on this thread! Good luck!

Aww thanks Jennifer. I'm sure it will go smoothly, the only question is how much it will hurt. :laughing

Why would it hurt? You're getting a 28% bump on your US currency. Be happy you're not doing the reverse currency conversion.

Yeah but this is all I get for 76 cents. :teeth

do you need to physically be present (say at a bank) to convert a large sum of money to the local currency or can you call a hotline immediately to lock in on a desirable rate?

i wonder what happened on may 30th that caused that dip ...

For your 76 cents US you get $1 Aus, that's good isn't it?
You new $1M Australian home will only cost you $US 760K + currency conversion fee which is lower the more money you convert.
If you're trying to time it so the conversion rate is more favorable then good luck with that. The chance if it going in the wrong direction for you is just as great. And from what I've seen the "pros" who predict currency values are more wrong than right.

Charles Schwab does it for me with a phone call and their rates are pretty good (yes they will lock in a rate). TransferWise works well for amounts under $10K. Definitely do NOT use a bank, they will rape you for something like 3%.

Yup, that's what makes this gut-wrenching. Chances are pretty good that no matter what I do, in hindsight it will cost thousands.

Any cobalt or lithium stocks worth looking into? Want to get into them before more shipping companies go electric and hybrid.

Posting for some closure... I woke up this morning to a dip at .7570 and jumped on it. I don't like straight-up speculating but sometimes it can't be helped. :toothless

yay for rodr! i was hoping you'd give us an update!

Bought T today. It dropped a buck in after market trading when the acquisition was approved.

Thinking of buying DBX. They seem to have a decent # of paid users & their recent quarterly was good.
