Short answer: partial ownership of a company that isn't publicly traded.

i like short answers :thumbup

which is why big institutional investors obviously can diversify by making that choice, not average Joe
what i heard yesterday is that the private equity firms are borrowing money from the big banks for different terms, so the math on the return on investment is less transparent

Yes, that's how private equity works. Like buying a house, those firms will put some money down and borrow a large chunk from lenders. Then they use the cash flows generated by the business to pay down that debt. Similar to how you would rent a house you own to pay down the mortgage. In the meantime, they improve operations to increase the amount of cash flow that their business generates in the hopes to sell it for more a few years down the line. That's traditional private equity. Other types include venture capital and REITs for example.

:thumbup i appreciate your elaborating on this for me :)

i listen to financial news on the radio when i get a chance. it's awful not knowing the fundamentals of what they're talking about, especially when someone is giving a warning about some general topic

Get off my grass.

I'm happy with my dividend stream. I just sold large positions (35% of my stock portfolio) to take gains and park the money. It's in a 2% money market fund for a while. I'm seeing the market upswing as done for a while.

Correct. The price is, IMHO, far beyond what is justified by income stream and customer numbers. The stock is way overpriced.

Its always been overpriced. Would have been nice to see it down 20% but this dip is a buying opportunity.
