Student Loan Debt Forgiveness?

Mississippi takes 2.5x for every buck they give, so it's a nice way to bump that ratio a few cents. Just ignore the part where you bring in much more revenue by getting those people educated and working, let's not worry about that part.

Their entire economy is farming and lumber. They gain no benefit from population education.

Yea, being a severely undereducated state almost entirely dependent on farming and lumber sure has done wonders for Louisiana's economic condition, hasn't it.

Maby they have Learned that education will teach them how to avoid taxes.
And move out of state...:laughing

This shit is still stupid.

Instead of giving students $10K to get a head start, where some may choose lower-cost programs so they don't go into much debt at all, we are helping repay debts to the people at the top, perpetuating an already broken system.

So, we already do this with Pell Grants, which max out at about 6500 a year currently, financial aide programs, etc. Those have also failed because the amount of support the grand gives doesn't keep up with the cost of education. Second, supporting people who have been fucked by the broken system is still a good thing. Third, as has already been discussed, The changes Biden has proposed to how student loans should be handled going forward will substantially improve the situation for future borrowers and current borrowers whose debt hasn't been completely paid off with this round of debt forgiveness. This isn't *just* 10k (20k for Pell grant recipients) in forgiveness.

Pell grants are for poor people only IIRC, so no we do not already "do this".

Never mind the fact that everyone who comes in after this won’t get the $10k for exorbitantly expensive school.

Keep kicking that can….

The department of education is working to rein in tuition costs and increase accountability of accreditation institutions. And increased the number of Pell grants given. More still needs to be done, but it's a start.

If this wasn't the case, it would never pass.

The oligarchy never loses.

Exactly. If you gave people 10K for getting into a school, even if it's a low-cost college, it would mean students would be motivated to go and get out with little cost to them. It means over a year of free tuition at San Jose State, for example.

Instead, we're lining the bags of those who gave loans to ultra-privileged kids who were able to go to a six-figure school.

are the “ultra privileged” talking federal student loans to help pay for college? didn’t realize that was much of a thing.

my niece started college this year, with the help of a $6k Pell Grant. nice to hear they are for-poor-people-only, guess I didn’t realize that, either. :laughing:facepalm

How much income qualifies as poor?

So in a different thread you complained about means testing to get tax credits for green appliances for your home improvement project, because it was means tested to, like 250k+ household income in your county.

Now you are complaining that the means testing of an income of 125k is not strict enough/low enough, claiming a bunch of 'ultra-privileged kids going to six figure schools' are the main beneficiaries of student loan forgiveness. (they aren't)

Can you make up your mind? Is means testing good or bad?

idk, always considered my family as being
among the beatifically privileged, but apparently not. :x

kinda more interested in how much income qualifies as "ultra-privileged," myself. :dunno

I’m getting pretty sick of hearing “we’re working on it” from our government. That usually means “the next administration may or may not handle it”.

As to Pell Grants.

https://ca.db101.org/ca/programs/in...y incomes,by only one educational institution.

Although students with family incomes up to $45,000 may be eligible, most awards go to students with family incomes below $20,000.

There is no limit on the number of years students can receive a Pell Grant, however only one award may be granted each year by only one educational institution.

We're treading in political territory here, so I'm going to withhold a response.
