At least 13 killed and 20 children missing in Texas floods
Searches are under way in the US state of Texas, after flash floods - here's what we know so far:

  • Authorities say 13 people have been killed during severe weather and flooding in Kerr County, Texas
  • Others, including around 20 children who had been at summer camp, remain unaccounted for
  • Within 45 minutes the Guadalupe River rose 26 feet (7.9 metres) causing a "destructive flood", Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said in a news conference
  • Patrick said a massive search is under way in flood zones, including helicopters, nine rescue teams and people on the ground. It will continue overnight
  • He said the number of confirmed dead is expected to change in the coming hours
  • Many roads in the central Texas region are currently impassable, delaying the reunification of young campers with parents

I think a factor in the flooding is that they've had a procession of storms move through them and the ground is probably saturated.

My daughter flys home to Texas tomorrow. She lives downstream from the flooding with the Canyon Dam upstream from Schertz where she lives. She also lives up a hill so will be dry. The Kerrville and Comfort area just off of I-10 are getting hard. We have been back there when the roads actually turn into creeks. City areas are made for the heavy rain. The roads have 6 inch steel poles in front of the drain areas to keep you car from going down the creek.
 
Seeing all the people lost in this is a heart breaker. :cry

Agreed. More storms moving through the already saturated area. I think it's going to be a very rough summer for Texas.
 
RIP to the lost and sincere condolences to their families. I can only hope that we increase preparedness for extreme weather events, to help ensure that fewer lives are lost to this kind of tragedy.
 
As many lives lost as in the deadliest wildfire in California history which was 85 during the Camp Fire in 2018.

Sadly it looks like this flood's numbers will actually far surpass that.

They didn't do it the last time this happened, when it was only a dozen kids killed. Maybe this time Texans will learn.


j/k. We're talking about government officials in Texas giving a rat's ass about their constituents. It won't happen this time, either.
 
Death toll now at 97. Kerr County had discussed buying water gauges and sirens after previous flood disasters and feared the risk to youth camp, but local residents rejected it as too expensive.

Seems like there were plenty of warning signs, but nobody applied any common sense to the signs.

Most of those deaths could have been avoided had there been any real thinking applied to the situation.

I guess it depends on what defines "plenty" from the distance of the armchair, BUT, I encourage everyone to see a graphic of how fast the floods happened.

TLDR I was surprised to see they happened within hours, and in the middle of the night. As for the "plenty", the only quick warning I could see, was let's say "flood watch" on the evening before, Thursday :dunno
