Nice Butch that sounds about right that's pretty much half the Loon Lake to Tahoe section. According to my GPS I was moving at a pace of 5.4mph average. Haha I was talking to some jeep guys and they said that's pretty good pace actually! It's really slow going I had to take lots of breaks and there was a lot of WTF moments like I was telling myself "Are you for real? you want me to go over that!? Ok..." Also it's easy to get lost especially in the slickrock, but it's fairly easy to get back on track, I had a GPS with me it was so handy. It's like a trials bike paradise, I could imagine just playing on the rocks all day. I could imagine a group of trials bike riders just hanging out on one section just telling each other I bet I can do that section or I can do it like this. etc...
I rode the KLX the next day on the Wentworth Springs section and I noticed the gas bike carries it's momentum through the rocks better than the electric. The electric is like it has a lightened fly wheel where my KLX feels like it has a heavy fly wheel. But it's more relaxing on the Light Bee since you don't have to turn it off or worry about stalling. Also don't have to worry about the jetting, the KLX would smell like fuel everytime I shut it off.
But yeah suddenly on a whim just wanted to go. I actually rode 2/3rds of the Rubicon on my DR650 couple years back. But I didn't do much of Loon Lake and I'm glad i didn't haha! I knew I had to do it now before it starts to snow. Fortunately it cooled down in the bay area and now it hot again to it turned out to be good weather in Sierras. It rained once at 0500 the night before I did Loon lake a bit. Then from the Tahoe side it rained again it was sprinkling and 40F, fortunately it didn't rain hard and the cool weather is welcomed when your getting the crap kicked out of you by rocks.
I also found out the battery doesn't like to be cold. Like 10C or 40F it doesn't want to charge. I found the sticker on the bottom of the battery that has the charging temp ranges and 10C is the lowest it will charge at. One night I literally took the battery out and stuck in front of a heater vent on my van to warm the battery up and then it charged then I wrapped my jacket around it. Another trick I learned is after you ride it charge it right away because the battery will be warm, I was able to charge it at freezing temps like that.
But yeah it was really fun, it's a different kind of riding I don't get to do very often. It was very challenging for me and I felt I started to get good at it. I almost want to do it again.
