The Electric Motorcycle Thread

Kawasaki recently posted this video (which is unburdened by any details :laughing ) about a potential electric street bike. There is some feel good marketing speak and very limited footage of a test mule with what looks like Ninja 300 bodywork on a test track.

Anyone know when the Big Four are going to release an electric street bike? Something more than a scooter?

You're kinda late to the party there is a post about it on the previous page

Whoops. Sorry about that.

As pointed out on the Sur Ron dirtbike thread Segway is going to be selling a Light Bee like dirtbike, basically rebadged Light Bee. Sounds like one is a dirtbike and other is supermoto. All I'm saying is what goodies can I use from this on my Light Bee =) hopefully they sell a cheaper battery.

According to Electrek the X160 is like a detuned USDM spec Light Bee. It has a weaker motor (maybe controller) and lower voltage battery. That's kind of interesting though because all USDM spec Light Bee only come with the 60V battery. So the X160 is like a lower spec Sur Ron Light Bee with supermoto wheels. I find that Luna made a bit of a mistake no selling a supermoto Light Bee model from the start. You figure not everyone is going to use it as a dirtbike. As I found out during the weekend the Supermoto kit with good tires is still a lot of fun on the trails.

The X160 features a 3 kW peak motor that helps the bike top out at 50 km/h (31 mph). It has a range of 65 km (40 mi) from its 48 V and 1 kWh battery.

The larger X260 has a stronger 5 kW peak motor and a higher top speed of 75 km/h (46.6 mph). Its larger 60 V and 1.8 kWh battery offers a higher range of 120 km (74.6 mi).

If you are wondering Segway owns a large chunk of Sur Ron

Sur Ron is actually in our ecosystem. We’re the largest shareholder of Sur Ron

Also here's how you can get one. For those prices I still think the Sur Ron is still a good deal. But its good to know there will probably be more than one place to buy parts now. I wish Segway would have sold the homologated version with the headlights and blinkers that the Europeans are enjoying right now.

How can you get a Segway electric dirt bike?
Segway-Ninebot will be marketing the X160 and X260 mostly in the US. The company will begin taking pre-orders for the electric dirt bikes later this month on Indiegogo. That platform has become a common launching pad for electric two-wheelers from startups and established companies alike.

The X160 and X260 have MSRPs of $2,999 and $4,999 respectively but will be offered with discounts during the pre-order period. Production and deliveries are expected to begin in Q1 of 2020.

Yeah I wish I could buy a 2nd battery for my Light Bee but it's $1600 o_O'

It's the one thing gas bikes have a huge advantage with. Manufacturers only need to design a gas can for their "battery" and it recharges in a few minutes and there are recharge stations everywhere and the energy density of gas is pretty decent.

Quite the opposite when you have to design a battery with current tech. The batteries are the major cost when creating an EV. Can you imagine how cheap the bikes would be if the batteries were a 10th of the price?

IMO, there should be a charge station of at least one type at every gas station, perhaps by law.

J-1772 stations are very cheap to install. No real reason to not already have such.

Perhaps it will be that way in just a few years.

is lightning motorcycles a Scam?

Great question - others on this forum are "closer" to it than I am in terms of having met the owner/team.

From a total outsider perspective, maybe they are just in over their head. I've said it before.. but going from a few one-off builds to mass production is a whole other ball game.

They haven't done much in terms of proving "we are on the right track though." They supposedly delivered one Strike in the past few months? Nothing since... so was that even a production model or just a PR stunt to show they are "making progress."

Who knows!

I would think J-1772 charging stations at a gas station don't make much sense. The charge time is too slow. Most vehicles take hours to charge on J-1772 plugs.

Gas stations are small pieces of land and need to maximize profit per square foot. I would think, all together, the best option is DC fast charging for them unless they are a huge gas station with room to give away.

No, their business model is just different from what some expect.

I have also heard battery delivery is problematic nowadays. Something about Riven sucking up all production capacity, and the Giga factory sucking big in Reno. Something.
We had a pretty cool party at Lightning in July.

Hmmm. There are people over seas claiming they paid in full for a 218, then came to the united states after waiting for months and the owner of Lightning tired to ignore then then extort them? Also claims of the lightning carbon being the 1st to be delivered after a 10,000 "deposit"- then when the 1st one was delivered - it was clearly not the carbon spec?

Has anyone ever seen a customer receive a unit?

I would say a Zero and Energica have it figured out. The price is still high - low volumes still, so no buying power.

Energica is closer to having it "figured out" the new 2020 battery pack an level 3 charging makes two of the problems to a minimum but still 30 minutes to charge is a long time for some people. I'm fine with it personally but plenty of folks would rather have the option to gas up in a few minutes and GTFO. The cost and weight of the batteries are still an issue. buying power only goes so far, they will never be as cheap as a gas tank.

Zero is still lagging behind without level 3 charging and their battery packs are now also behind in several ways.

A DC charger would make a lot more sense CCS/ChaDeMo allow a much faster turn around. The Level 2 chargers would make more sense at a place like a park or beach where you're likely to spend a few hours there.

Their business model seem to be that of a failed kickstarter campaign. Shipping units in July.... run DMC

The wheelbase of the new 2020 model year Energicas decreased 1.2" to 57.7". Snappy :ride

Didn't know that. I do love me a short wheel base. Great for the tight stuff and makes the sweepers more eventful.

I just want to know how much the new Energica's with that huge battery are gonna be.. $30k?

Just adding Ohlins front and rear adds about $4k to their bikes. I'd assume Ohlins + new battery is gonna be like $35k
