The Electric Motorcycle Thread

I rode a Cake today, Metcalf, Four Fingers, yeah, all four. It was interesting. More later.

The Cake Kalk OR is the dirtbike I rode and was so different than my Alta that it is pointless to compare. If I rode for a couple hours I could say if I liked it or not. I will say it did not handle washboard bumps well. The front wheel felt too small. Still, at this point my first impression is reserved.

Cool you got to test ride it on dirt, so how long was your test ride? Is the above your review or there is more?

I got a brief test ride on the street at Evolution, I kinda like it, but I need to test ride it on dirt for a couple of session at least. I am a dirt noob so its hard for me to gauge it.

I just added more. You should get one. Awesome for a dirt newb, except then you will be ruined.
Edit: you can test ride the Kalk at Metcalf. We could set up a BARF test day!

I haven't ridden 4 fingers yet at Metcalf.

Many EV motorcycles have a "gear box" - like your cordless drill, but are single speed. Do you mean a multi-speed transmission like the Brammo?

The internal combustion had a limited range of practical speed, so that is why is needs a multi-speed transmission as a crutch. Yet, we can include transmissions on electric motorcycles for nostalgia at the expense of weight, cost, size, ext.
 
Just got the email for the Zero SR/S announcement. Looks like 2/24/2020.

The assumption is this is a full fairing model of the SR/F. :thumbup
 
I remember reading somewhere that Zero uses a relatively low voltage battery design that they found wouldn't reliably work with US based DC chargers. My guess is still no DC fast charging from Zero unless the SR/S makes the jump to a higher voltage system which may require some of the liquid cooling that both Energica and H-D employ.

Again, working from an old man's memory so I may be wrong on one or more of the above statements.

It's kind of weird to be releasing an electric vehicle in 2020 that does not support fast charging.
 
I'll have to let smarter folks than me answer the DC to DC converter question.

I figure anything's possible, but yeah, it does seem like DC charging is becoming a "must-have" on any kind of EV (car or bike) these days.

Zero's run a ~100V battery pack.

The specification for first gen CCS DC charging is 200-500VDC 80A max (40kWh). This is why Zero's can not use this infrastructure.

DCDC converters for these sorts of amperage and voltages are quite heavy and quite expensive.

There are a few other factors in this also:
Is the battery packs wiring and electronics able to cope with 1.5-2x the input?
Are the cells able to absorb energy at a higher C rate without degradation?

For Zero to move to voltages high enough to allow for DCFC the entire core of their bikes (battery, motor, controller, charger, BMS, VCU, wiring) would need to be redesigned. High voltage has benefits for high speeds and fast charging but most of their models would not benefit from this. Keeping your entire ecosystem using the same technology is a great way to keep costs down, even if there are some trade offs.

The DCFC stations are only along the freeways, and not along the twisties. I did the map and math planning for a Skaggs loop for the new 20 kWh Energica SS9+ with DCFC vs my 13.0 kWh Zero SR with potential install of 10 kW DigiNow. It's pretty much the same amount of time, but the Zero SR affords more flexibility of where to spend more charging time, in case the environment or accommodations are poor.

AFAIK, any vehicle that can use CCS can also charge with J-1772.

The older Energica battery charges faster than the new, per mile of charge added, in most cases.

With a battery a KWH is only a KWH at the current draw they spec it at. They can spec it where they get the very best numbers, which may not be the way you want to use it.

By Energica's own specs:

The 21.5/ /18.9 KWH battery is 61% more capacity in KWHs than the 13.4/11.7 KWH battery by Energica's own numbers.

However, the charge time is DOUBLE (100%) longer. 0-85% 40 min versus 20 minutes.

And the new battery is obviously only 40% more in capacity at the higher speeds, however, is really double capacity at the slow city speeds, when we ignore the KWH ratings.

Freeway range on the 13.4/11.7 KWH battery=80 mile
Freeway range on 21.5/ /18.9 KWH battery=112 miles

City is 124 / 249 miles

But the charge time is exactly double when charging to 85% SOC.

Energica's own spec for the CCS charge times are "0 to 85% SOC 20 Min" for the 13.4/11.7 KWH battery and 40 min for the 21.5/ /18.9 KWH battery.

This means, with the newer battery, we get the same miles added per minute charge at slow speeds, but much less than that if riding at higher speeds when compared to the 13.4/11.7 KWH battery.

IOW, an average of more miles added per minute charge on the older battery.

So if they both charge at 26 KW max, it seems the older battery is more efficient than the new.

Someone posted to reddit. Looks legit - although I've never seen a Zero video with narration. I wonder if this was a mistake posted by someone on their team as the YouTube account is not Zero's official.

Styled like a 748 and SV650S. The footpeg height and knee angle were a complaint on the SR/F. I hope the full fairing offers 25%+ on full tuck on the highway, I get 13%+ with my Madstad windshield on a Zero S which is a lego brick that can tip over without damage.
