The Electric Motorcycle Thread

No, I mean dirt bikes. Alta is dead, the rest are dual sports. The KTM Freeride and soon to be released Sur Ron are 3/4 sized dirt bikes. But nobody is making anything like the Alta right now.

I'm looking to buy a Beta in 2 years when my truck payment is up. Coulda been an electric bike if there were multiple companies competing against each other to evolve their products. The only company who has offered anything of the quality of an ICE bike is Alta.

I don't know what you mean by dirt bike because I've ridden my Sur Ron everywhere I would ride a "dirt bike" and more because it's plated. The cake is a like a bigger more powerful sur ron. I haven't ridden the KTM yet but it's suppose to be a "dirt bike" you ride it on the dirt. Please clarify dirt bike?

dirt bike noun
Definition of dirt bike
: a usually lightweight motorcycle designed for operation on unpaved surfaces

If the Sur Ron at 125lbs and the Cake at 150lbs isn't light weight and ridden on unpaved surfaces what kinda bikes are they?

Looks unpaved to me

Clem, closest things to a dirt bike at the moment would be the KTM and in some ways the Electric Motion. Still waiting on the honda.

These Electric Motions have a CLUTCH!

You could honestly "define" it however you please, call it the mega dirt bike or whatever. Doesn't matter what I call it. Bottomline, it's not what the market is willing to buy as replacements. You've got a niche product for niche buyers. Hell, Alta didn't even make it and they made a premium product but were just slightly ahead of their time.

When I say dirt bike, I mean a no-compromise, single track ready dirt bike. Less than 260lbs, 11-12" suspension travel, 2 hours of riding time, and can hill climb like my XR400.

These bikes with bicycle suspension and anemic motors will not suffice. I've ridden the Alta, I know what is possible, nothing comes close to what they made yet. If there was an Alta-level bike at 10,000$, it would be worth buying.

The electric motion bikes seem COOL, though. I wouldn't mind a trials bike, but not ready to financially commit to one. Can you guys vote for people who pay teachers more, please?

And a funny thing, I have a new neighbor who has the Sur Ron and KTM bikes, and I've been working on some singletrack in the forest between our houses. hopefully he will join me and let me ride the two bikes.

That's the definition according to merriam webster I don't know how much more DEFINED you can get. It might be a niche product but Sur Rons are selling out left and right. Sur Ron is making it and they're not selling overpriced products, it's the most affording electric dirtbike you can buy at the moment, if I could buy an Alta or Cake I would but I don't want to fork over 2x or 3x the money.

Kuberg Freerider and Ranger both seem to offer far better value than Cake, about 1/2 price when comparing a 14kW Kuberg to a 11kW Cake. Even the Ranger with a double battery weights a lot less than the Cake. These may not do some things a "real" dirt bike may do but at the super low weight (120# for the Ranger) they can do things a "real" can't. I took out my back trying to get my WR250R out of a ditch. You have the weight of a 50cc, the H.P. of a 200-220cc and the torque of a 1000cc+. What could you do with that?!

ding!

Alta
Sur Ron
Cake
Zero
KTM

I have ridden all these except the Sur Ron. Plus Electric Motion. There is one other that looks like a delivery bike that i can't recall the name right now.

Edit, yeah, Ubco. I had no desire to ride it. The KTM E Ride is a pretty cool trail bike. Nothing else yet as I have seen.

Back me up here!

Hades, I understand you have a more broad view of a dirt bike and its definition, but a sur Ron is not a replacement for my xr400 in any way. I would love to buy a new four stroke bike, but I just want an electric bike that will change my mind. Something of equal performance to a 250 four stroke.

I think you're thinking of the Ubco, I have seen one riding around town once. They have one called the 2x2, it's 2wd I guess. I think evolution is selling them also, I should see if I can take one for a spin.

They are also going to be selling something called a FRX1, probably closest you'll get to a Sur Ron. Slightly heavier, roughly same top speed (stock sur ron is 47mph), range looks double (but they always lie about the range), takes double the time to charge it also. 15kw it's got about double the power of a stock sur ron also.

If you wanna ride a Sur Ron you can ride mine Butch. It's not stock though. A stock sur ron has about the same power as a 125cc 4stroke, mine is probably more like a 180 or 200cc I passed a 230cc in the last supermoto race. Since you ride the Alta you should be used to the powah! I just rode it at Metcalf today and rode all the trails but man on the really rough trails the Sur Ron can't handle it, doesn't like those steep whoopie section, everything else it rips!

I've ridden an XR400 couple times and you'll probably get that performance from an Alta or Cake. Or a modified Sur Ron. Best thing of all no kickstart.

Ubco did a demo at Metcalf a long time ago (more than a year ago I think). Only me and my friend showed up. It was my first time riding dirt at Metcalf. I didn't like that 2x2, it has scooter ergo with the pegs too far forward, awkward to stand.

There was a Ubco van at metcalf this summer, I talked to the rep for a little bit about that frx1, (he was riding a sur ron)

Gonna drop this here too, got my electric build stolen on Saturday around 5 pm. There's a photo in my thread in general. If you see it (or half scrapped parts in an encampment) let me know

The Wattman Voxan? Cool name.
What ICE bike tumbled off a throne?

I think it's just for electrics could be ICE for some of the records. Goes to show how much aerodynamics plays a part. When I drag race the Light Bee if the wind just blows in my direction it changes my ET.

Cool to still see Max Biaggi still rocking some speed.

CFMoto is doing E police bikes in China.
KTM collaboration a key accoring to the the article.
