The Electric Motorcycle Thread

Zero have apparently announced a limited edition carbon farkle package for the SR/F, the "Quickstrike". Truly do not understand what these Zero people are thinking. Was the world clamoring for farkles on a $25000 bike that can only go 100 miles? They really need to get the cost and weight under control, and the range up, and the price down!

Agreed and make a legitimate dirt bike!

Yeah, and it's grand for the bling!

Saw the lame ass quickstrike in my email. Lame that they cant at least put a limited run bike and throw some brembos and ohlins on it, shed some actual weight or something. nope just a bunch of dumb cosmetic shit.

I dont think Zero cna do quick charging with their current batter tech, the cells are all epoxied together so no way of them being able to dissipate the heat, not to mention the voltage is low.

Ugh, was this the 2022 batch of new announced by Zero every September? No SR/DS?

I think Zero has some exciting stuff in the pipeline according to a post I saw awhile back.

A Zero employee said:
...keep your eyes peeled in the coming months. I don't think you'll be disappointed....

I'd like to believe they were not referring to the Quickstrike lol.

I don't mind farkles but I don't understand limiting it to 100 bikes. With the exception of the carbon fiber fenders, the rest of the bits look like Rizoma add-ons that anyone can buy and install. I guess if you must have the laser-etched Zero name/logo over the Rizoma logo...sure.

It would have made more sense to offer a Quickstrike accessory package that any SR/F or SR/S owner can order and have installed rather than calling it a special edition bike.

I guess that's why I don't work in marketing...lol.

Didn't know if there was an e-car thread and didn't want to start one, so I'm sharing this here... pretty cool!

Well that's definitely not something you see on that kind of trail in Moab. You'd expect to see rock crawlers and modified Jeeps or Tacomas. That seems like it's really bad for the motor because you are lugging the motors, they said there is 4 motors so one on each wheel. But that's why you have a hi lo range =P

I saw a Rivian in San Jose one time, there were doing some testing in not so good part of town =p

Lugging an electric motor?

Yes if you don't let it rotate it will overheat the motor. There is an efficient RPM range for motors. So when the truck is sitting there trying to move and it isn't moving but you are putting power through it will heat the motor up. You can see the wheels are trying to propel the truck but it doesn't have enough power to pull it along they're lugging the motor, its very bad for it. Not to mention it puts a lot of strain on the powertrain, the battery will draw more power.

I think that's the fan noise heard in the video - fans working to keep the motors cool while sending all that power with only a few rpm. I was surprised how much it peeled out a given tire. I figured a 4-motor electric would only send power where it's getting the most traction. Then again, maybe it's designed to claw through top-level detritus in order to reach the firmer ground below. At any rate, it's awesome to see electrics making so much headway into the spotlight.

While that is true with most motors, motors used in EVs are quite a bit different, They are ran by a complicated PWM waveform and draw very little current at low RPMs. That is where you get you best range and least amount of heat.

The PWM is not just simple PWM either. Sometimes improvements are made just by making minor changes to the waveshape when compared to more conventional PWM. For an example, they increased the range of my Tesla by a few miles while I was getting an update as I sleep. The change was to the waveshape to make it even more efficient.

The PWM is a pulse every 120° of motor rotation. That's why there are three wires going to the motor. Fed to the motor three times at three different places to get a full 360° for a single rotation.

But there is a limit. You shouldn't use the motor on a hill to stop the vehicle from moving, at least not for long. If the motor cannot move at all, then it will heat up if power is applied. So then, just use the brake and all will be fine. But even very slow RPMs are fine, and will also give great range when the speed is very low.

That's exactly what I was getting at. You can see the wheel is trying to move but it can't. It is loading up the motor. It was actively trying to climb, power applied and it wasn't going anywhere. I mean I guess it's a good torture test I guess if that's what they are going for.

I rode alta recently. I loved it. I took it for a ride after day long ride om my 350 exc.
Some tight single truck with technical features. Right behind some houses in a forest(close to Yosemite). Despite the weight it was light handling bike with 450 torque.
But, my friend got it almost new for 1/2 price. And he just foolling around close to home. So 25 mile range is ok for what he does. If it had 100 miles range as is I would pay full price. But not for 25 miles.

^ only 25 miles! I thought it was more, this is just slow speed riding right?

some surron action in Taiwan
I wonder how popular the surron is over there...

I consistently get 40 miles of 15 mph trail riding. My bud only gets 30, but he is quick. That is almost three hours, so that works.
The motard Alta I have will get me 40 miles up and down Mt Hamilton rd if I am light on the throttle.

Yeah, that is problematic. First World Problems.

How big is the battery on the Alta? The Light Bee is 2.2kwh and I can rip around Metcalf for 20 miles before it's dead.

I can make it to Lick Observatory but I need to bring an extra battery pack. I think I might have been the first Sur Ron to ride up there.
