The Home Grower's Thread

Hey fellas , I am wondering if any of you have some advice on checking the trichomes. When I use my loop I can get a decent look at them but still can't quite tell if the light is making them look a little cloudy. Seems like the light is reflecting and making some look cloudy but when I take a closer look with my camera I can see the ones without a light glare or reflection of the actual plant seem clear. From far they look white but I still think they need time. Germinated sprouted and planted on 4/20 will post pics but just wondering what you all do when looking at trichomes. Do you use light? Do you shut your lights ? Use Flash? Thanks. AK and GC are the strains

Your AK will finish before your GC. I've run AK at 9 weeks but have finished it at 8 weeks also. GC can be fickle (depending on cut)... never ran GC (or AK) from seeds. Last couple of GC runs I did I ran it to 10 weeks.

In regards to trichome checking... I usually cut a small piece off and study it that way. Doing it on the plant in the room/tent can be challenging and as you know the lights/movement can make it difficult to get an accurate picture.

Thanks for the input! The GC is my first run got super lucky and found the seeds in a bud before packing a bowl and there were about 10. The GC looks great, very healthy easy to grow plant that took longer to flower but the buds are big and dense. The AK is an auto that was odd last harvest. Not very dense nuggets but still very enjoyable. I have a 60-100x I tried using but like you said in the area is hard to tell. I will snip a little piece next time instead. Again, thanks for the help

That is the exact one that I use I also have the same one with 40x only. The led light is exactly what I was asking about since the light reflects off the trichomes I think some of them end up looking milky but then when I look closer and at the pics they still seem clear. Oh and you are 100% right about the practice

Yeah I'm not the best either at judging the tricomes :(

I go by time too...I mean I know an autoflower is done in about 12 weeks and a photo is done ~ X weeks after switching to flower.

:thumbup I think the autos and LED combo end up taking a little longer than expected or at least the AK has each time in my experience. I still think I could have left it longer last time and was just too afraid to end up with some couch lock crap lol

Love that photo Mike!

GC as in green crack? Dream Queen?

Don't like couch lock either, so I'd always pick a little early for myself. Those leaves are crazy deep green for cut time though.

Thanks Byke, yes green crack and the other is the ak47 never had dream queen yet but I'm really surprised by the GC . It started off really fast growing and then fell over due to being so skinny. Because it was young it didn't crack the stem so I let it grow like some natural lst. It ended up standing straight up again quickly and then I fimmed it right before I put it in the tent for 12\12. Im fairly certain I should have left my last harvest for another few days but it's all just my personal stash so no complaints and just trying to step it up this time.

They renamed green crack to dream queen, I think because it sounded bad from a medical perspective. I grew some last year and really liked it. I love blue dream and pretty much any blue dream variant buds nicely. Had a mishap earlier this year and broke a few plants. On one, the main stalk broke and I put duct tape on it just kinda for laughs and it worked for a bit, but then it got hot and fell over. Looks neat now with the main bent and scarred at 90 degrees then going straight up and budding. Fun stuff.

Thanks, had no idea they renamed it and to be honest it is why I used the GC instead of calling it crack lol. It is a really nice strain I enjoy and I really enjoy letting the girls do what they would do in the wild. I have a couple of branches on the AK that has broken but ends up growing all those little buds much better than the regular outreaching branches even higher up.

I thought I was crazy for letting my girls heal and add in extra harvest time due to some 90% bends and breaks. I love when that angle grows in strong it is like supercropping by natural selection IMO and I am in no rush. I love seeing what cannabis can do!

My buddy does stuff for big yields, but his setup is miserable to work with. I'll cut off everything on the lower half so it's easy to get to for water/feed and keep it enjoyable, even if they yield a little less.

Are yours breaking from the weight of buds? You can get cheap plastic trellising and toss it over the whole plant so that the weight from one side helps support the weight from the other side. That way you don't have to build a frame to tie the trellising to and it works pretty well.

I cut off some tops today, day 57, and hung them to dry. Will let the bottoms go another week so they purple up!

The AK has bent from weight and thin stems each time. I have most supported by loose zipties and did much better this time but still had two spots where it hung from weight. I am definitely going to try that trellising with the next grow. That AK is a little tricky to control but it grows every time and is super resilient. Hope your girls ripen up nicely on the bottom half! I have to try that two different harvest times , I had a lot of small buds that I gave to my wife to make tinctures and vape last time.

Nice! I really want to try some extract stuff. HHM posted a couple pieces of kit pages back that get good reviews. I go hot and cold on edibles, but they're amazing after a long day of manual labor. Mix in a hot tub and you'd probably die from insanely awesome levels of relaxation.

DUDE!!!! yes, so much yes.

Haha, we always on the same weed page. Do you sign off for the summer, or do you have something going now?

Moved the 3 rooted clones to the coco/perlite 5 gallons.

I'll give the other two clones a few more days.

This time I really ensured the coco was packed down / settled so that it came to the top of the springpot (highly recommended item).

I finally took a little clipping from the girls and they both can use some more time. It was so much better using the 60x100 once I was able to actually focus it and see the trichomes it was so much easier to tell the stalks were clear and only a few had the slight cloudy look in the tip. Maybe a couple of cloudy here and there but not a single sign of an amber nor half cloudy. Thanks for the advice it is really going to help this harvest and yes HH the 60x100 was much trickier to use than the loops but the results were worth the few minutes of frustration.
