The Rescue Bike (ATK build)

Brought a big smile to my face. I love that feeling! :thumbup

Nemo came over and helped me for many hours the other night. We set up the big fan and ran the bike for 7 minute intervals and performed 3 oil changes.
The good news? No metallic yuck in the initial oil and after the second change we were getting clear clean oil out of the engine :banana

A word about dry sumps. My learning curve is like a cliff on this subject. The oil in the frame reservoir pressurizes. Putting a drain pan under the bike and pulling the plug is a no bueno. Instead you have to position the pan like a catcher's mitt then locate it appropriately underneath the bike. I enjoyed my oil bath and have come out of this with a healthy respect for those KTM mechanics who have finessed a method for oil changing.

With the mechanics fairly sorted and a new front fender on order, I was disappointed the the rear fender was no longer available :(

Looking over my rear fender I realized that it was in similar shape as my plastic lawn chairs.

The fasteners are looking a little on the stored outdoors on its side on a dock :|

That black square is the old dealer sticker.

with the help of a heat gun I was able to pull the old sticker pretty easily.
Note the interesting effect of sunlight on the old sticker.

That rear fender has memories! Looks like mine. Similar condition. I have been wrestling with replacing it with a KTM part. I don't know...

Do you think you will do the SheetIron 300 this year? I'm trying to get my bike ready.

It would be COOL to see both of these beasts on the Sheetiron this year. I am most likely going to be there on my little DR two-fiddy, assuming I can get the front end sorted by then.

Tell me moar about this *Sheetiron* you speak of. :nerd

I'm not so sure about the Sheetiron :|

More rear fender pics...OK only one but thought you all would appreciate the stamp on the back.
Note that the "factory" rear fender on my AMERICAN made bike is sourced from a vendor in Italy for an Austrian brand machine :laughing

TIRE TIME! :banana
I can't believe I am finally at the tire stage!!

When Nemo was over she pulled the wheels while I made sammiches. :laughing
Picture if you will, one ThumperX covered in engine oil (clean hands though) working the grill.

The poor bike even more naked.

I know, the shop is a mess :(
We haven't quite put ourselves back in order since our last job. Those are two stroke pumps in the background. Ferocious things they are.

Going back to the bikes unfortunate state when it was discovered (laying on its side with the canal water lapping its front wheel) I had certain concerns regarding the condition of the beautiful DID wheels.
The rim locks had bonded to the wheel :|

The front wheel bore the worst of the abuse :(

Hopefullythe wire wheel and new clear coat will save it for a season. In the meantime I have my eyes open for a set of wheels.

G, you can ride with me. I am terrible on dirt, and I am fat as hell. I have no doubt that you would smoke me offroad if you felt like it. I'll just be putting along on my little DR two-fiddy anyway. I've never done the Sheetiron, and I really want to do it before my body finishes going completely to hell.

Oh, I love the fender pic, but the one you just posted with the bike on the lift, sans wheels is GLORIOUS. That is a sexy, sexy beast. :thumbup

Wouldn't recommend it on the ATK this time around but you'd be fine on your XT.

(And, yes, I'm reading every word of this thread! :))

Let me know if you need more help Monday, G. This project is exciting. Oof, that front wheel looks bad, but the corrosion will buff right out, I'm sure. :laughing

I'm out for the Sheetiron this year, but someday, dang it, we should do it together.

Meanwhile, here's one we should aim for sometime--the San Luis Obispo teeter-totter dualsport! (Makes my knees shake just to watch, honestly)

I was thinking the same. I think that Beastie and I have a date in the desert to learn one another and not with a towel taped to the frame either ;)

I can actually feel that teeter totter and I'm not scared. Surfing waves in a 22 ton boat gives you a lot of training for that :laughing

Nemo, yes please I think Monday can possibly be, button her up and run to Buck's day :party

The auto parts stores are carrying special paints meant for plastics these days. You might be able to put a couple coats of white on that fender and improve it's appearance. :thumbup
