Well, it's finally officially announced after a good number of leaks and rumors!

Teaser - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-iWFeD0dkI

Specs - https://www.motorcycle.com/manufact...e-off-yamaha-unveils-the-new-2022-yzf-r7.html

Looks like key specs are same brake rotors, but radial 4-piston Brembo calipers and radial Brembo master cylinder. Forks are fully adjustable KYB, shock is adjustable for preload and rebound. And of course, the beloved CP2 engine, now with a slipper clutch and optional quickshifter.

I was honestly shocked when I first read the price, but it makes sense - it has to compete with the RS660 which makes more power and has better electronics, but was still not expecting the price to be 9000, especially since seemingly it competes on brakes and suspension.

I did find it interesting that they went with the more aggressive clip-on position compared to the raised clip-ons of the RS660, but I have heard of people wanting the more aggressive position on the 660 anyways so I guess it won't matter too much. I'm also sure that the twins racing scene is going to be very happy with this bike - should be much easier/cheaper to start from the R7 instead of building up an MT-07.

Side note, I'm really happy to see NorCal being featured more in launches and promos - first, the new Monster launch in SF and at Alice's and now the R7 teaser being shot at Thunderhill and what looks like some of our local twisties.

That's the first interesting (to me) Yamaha street bike I've seen come along in a very very long time.

689CC crossplane engine. I'm interested. I wonder how aggressive the ergonomics and seating position will be. I just sold the GSXR 750 and picked up an Yamaha FZ1 because it was so damn uncomfortable to ride.

From that write up, looks like a well designed bike.

I'm sad to see the R6 go but hopefully this will reinvigorate the segment a bit. Yamaha's offering a real mid-weight sportbike that has usable torque for around town/neighborhoods, easy/familiar for mechanics to work on, insurance friendly engine performance, and Yamaha's rock-steady reliability... all at a reasonable cost in a gorgeous package (albeit less gorgeous than that dead-sexy RS660). I wonder how the racing world will adjust if other manufacturers follow suit and the ~600cc segment evaporates. Between that and the rise of electric bikes, racing and track days are going to get really interesting the next few years!

Another thing that could be very interesting for racing is the ability to map an electric bike to behave like a ICE. Would be cool to see E-bikes racing ICE bikes. Will it happen? Probably not. But the ability to race the same eBike in "600cc" and "1000c" class with a quick remap of the electric motor's output would be so cool!

But I digress... Can't wait to see the R7 start popping up on the street!

I recall reading about this mappable electric bike idea before as well - not sure if it was here on BARF or somewhere else, but the idea that you could have a standardized powertrain to adapt to different racing classes would be awesome!

I was at first thinking that it would be difficult using one motor across different classes due to the lack of weight change between a 400cc equivalent and a 1000cc equivalent, but then I realized that a lot of the weight on an electric bike is the battery pack and not the motor. That would tie in well with different displacement classes too, as you could add more batteries in series and increase the voltage and ultimately the power of the motor.

I expected this to be a thread revival. I remember the original R7s that ran AMA Superbike before they went up to 1000cc. They were hardly available to the general public and cost about $35k IIRC.
This new one looks pretty sweet. In a new world of ADVs, street fighters and cruisers count me as someone happy to see a new sport bike hit the show rooms. I hope it does well.

Nice to see them come out with something new. Although, if they had used the triple from their FZ09, they would have had hit out of the park. Still crossing fingers they make a track oriented version with the CP3.

I like everything but the name and the power. Feels odd that an R7 makes significantly less power than an R6.

I think most of the hate I've seen around this bike has been focused on the same thing - branding the bike as part of their super-sport lineup feels a bit disingenuous, especially when the competition (RS660) makes significantly more power.

I think it's an interesting bike overall though, hoping I get a chance to try one out.

This looks like (paper-specs) the SV650-R everyone has been asking Suzuki for since forever ago.

They killed the R6 for this?? Lol

Right? Makes not much sense that the Aprilia 660 is selling like hotcakes @ $11.3K and the 2020 R6 can't sell many units. Perhaps that's because it's pretty much the same thing as a 2008 R6.

I was at Laguna yesterday. Soooo many new liter bikes on electronics. These dudes are doing things that would put them on the ground 5 years ago, and getting away with it. Electronics killed the R6 in the end, IMO....

It's sad what's happened over the years.....

This will forever be the only R7:

In my opinion this doesn't deserve to be called an R. An "R7" should be a 150hp 750cc inline 4 race replica. Not a 70hp twin....

So as a track bike to play on it sounds great for the lower HP crowd. I’m interested… but if its so outclassed by the Aprilia will anyone race it?
