Thoughts on current model BMW cars?

I'm just glad they're back in the American market. Curious as to reliability and dealer support, though.

The launch modes are on a completely new platform, which means the smart choice is either lease or wait a couple years. But, I'm hopeful that they will do well. At least dealer selection should be ok because they can piggyback on FCA dealers.

1. You're out your damn mind

2. You're out your damn mind

3. 'splain. Only exciting close to the top of the range how? Driven at the limit? More expensive options like M4 / M5 / M6 vs 435/440 and 550 / 650?
(annnnnnnd still out your damn mind :laughing)

Stan, I'd love an M4, but can't swing that anytime soon. The next big purchase I make is hopefully going to be a house, not another car. I do fucking love the M4s though. Sexy beast of a coupe.

Unless you are making well into the six figure range and have plenty of equity in a house, buying a $60K+ car with depreciation rates of a person jumping out of an airplane without a parachute is crazy/poor use of $$$.

If you hate money getti g a new BMW sounds great. The things values plummet. Just get a used one in good condition. If it falls apart it will probably still cost you far less than the depreciation you wouldve had.

If you want a 2-door, sure.

But the 4-series 4-door (the "gran coupe") is very ugly compared to a regular 3-series IMO

Youre obsessed with the looks. Other stuff matters.

Buy a 10 year old Mercedes AMG of the 63 variety. Sexiest exhaust note ever, but they're lacking all the fancy new tech that no one needs.

Not necessarily. I've spent the purchase price of my used E46 on maintenance over 3 years of ownership. It's always something. The last one was better, but still a couple of thousand a year.

Unless you truly love to wrench on cars, have the flexibility to take another means of transport to work and/or do a lot of pickup & dropoff at a shop during work hours, an old BMW is a poor choice.

A new one is expensive in its own way.

Basically having one means regular large withdrawals from your bank account, either to an Indy repair shop or to a dealership finance department. Stay away unless you have stellar job / income security and have substantial money to burn after taking care of the essentials.

I bought my first M3 brand new when I was 22, and I didn't own a house yet. Was it a smart move? No, but buying things on emotion never is. I did however get to enjoy that car in my young age. Kinda like racing motorcycles. Doesn't make financial sense, but damn if it isn't fun!

We're lucky in the fact that the appreciation for our house in the last 12 months alone could probably buy 2 M3s, but i'm an old man now (40) and driving the new m3 doesn't have the some fun as it did when I was 22.

I know Pete is a lot younger than me - go get the car man! ;)

Alfa
BMW
Merc
BMW
Someone help me out here, I'm not getting it :wtf

BTW Alfa has their own version of the Miata. Just saw one the other day, and unfortunately it looks boxier than the Miata. Also it has a turbo so it's not as linear as the Miata, so meh...

That's called the Fiat 124 Spider.

It's basically a Miata with Italian styling and a Fiat engine, and is definitely not an Alfa.

I think he's talking about the spider. My buddy has one. Nice car.

Lol. I'm not THAT much younger. And like I said my next big purchase is going to be a house.

My neighbor bought his 16yo kid an M5 (circa 2000 model). Can't get more nonsensical than that, but it ain't my money or my insurance.
