Thoughts on current model BMW cars?

So... be the 1st owner, but should buy a CPO?

You have 4 options IMO.

1. Buy new
2. Buy lightly used from dealer (but with factory warranty remaining)
3. Buy lightly used from BMW dealer (but with factory warranty renaming)
4. Buy lightly used from private party (but with factory warranty renaming)

Then enjoy your car worry free for a few years. Make judgement on reliability yourself.

That's actually possible...sort of. Though not recommended.

Service loaners are titled by the dealership, usually spend less than a year in the loaner fleet, then get sold as a CPO.

But damn are people hard on loaners. They almost never put anything but the shittiest 87 octane gas in and just the general fuckery you expect in the Hertz fleet, just with more expensive high line cars.

Absolute best strategy is to hang out on a forum for a couple months, getting to know who the players are, who owns something you like, what the good mods are, what to look out for, the secret fixes, etc. Sooner or later a respected member will offer a very good deal on a well-kept ride for thousands less than a dealer would ask, or even what some Craigslist moron would ask.

Buy a 10 year old Mercedes AMG of the 63 variety. Sexiest exhaust note ever, but they're lacking all the fancy new tech that no one needs.

Robert, I'll sell you a perfect shape SL63 with 44K miles for under $40K.

If you buy the BMW, don't look back on depreciation and repairs. Some people get lucky...but they all lose value faster than the Hindenburg post fire. That double edged sword, reliability AND depreciation, is the reason we don't buy BMW's anymore unless they're already really beat down. People will tell you "buy what makes you happy". I agree, but be sure to factor in spending greenbacks while you own it. If you finance it for over 60 months, you'll be married to the thing because the depreciation out paces the payments.

Drove a 430i convertible that my boss had as a rental today. It was nice.

I wonder about that for lease returns also. If someone knew they were unloading it in a year or so then would they concern themselves with doing the right thing for the car or save 20% on fuel.
I've had salesman tell me you don't need to run premium even though the sticker says so.
No I wouldn't take any maintenance advice from a salesman. But what would the damage be if someone ran regular for 20K in a premium required car?

If you get an Alfa, make sure to memorize what all the check engine light codes mean. It'll save you time.

I've owned and operated 3 series BMWs for over 25years. I'm not a mechanic, but have been very happy with longevity etc. Have your maintenance done as specified and you will have no problems IMHO. The 3 series hold value better than most cars in its class. :thumbup
