Tomahawk Tire Test

Leonard said:
Sorry to inform me of what? I am talking about riding down country roads at a sporting pace. Not about a top rider trying to get the last shred of performance on a race track because he is being paid to write a report. These tires cost $152 delivered not $350 like some more sticky tires. I would have no problem taking them to the track and having a good time on them. They worked as well as other sport tires for me and held up as well. I would be very surprised if many riders have the level of skill of the riders who write for MCN or appreciate some of the differences in tires. I have seen people on sport touring tires smoking your average sport bike rider. I found them to be more sticky than the B010 and as least as sticky as the SportTecs. And they are plenty sticky for Mines Road. Why don't you do your own test and see how they work for you?

Whoa calm down dude. I just thought that would be good info for you to know. My bad for the posting the link and unintentionally stealing your joy. Enjoy your tires and have fun riding. :thumbup

Here is a miliage update. I had a real nice ride yesterday down Mines, over Hamilton and then Calavaras to Palomares. Those roads are very tight and technical. These tires turned and stuck just fine at a nice sporting pace. I was pleased that they didn't go off as they got near the end. I have gone over 2100 miles on them now. So they have held up as well as other sport tires have for me. The back is close to done while the front still has some rubber. This is typical since I am riding a high torque bike and riding on abrasive chip seal roads.

I will probably get the higher mileage back tire next time as I like to get a little more out of a set of tires. These have lasted me just two months. Right before I rode three sets of BT010/020s in a row and averaged about 3300 miles and they lasted about three months each. The 020 is a higher mileage compound. Also I rode on them over the winter and on some trips, which increased the milage. Before that I rode three sets of Mez SporTecs in a row and they lasted about 1800 miles and about two months each.

Tire choice is an interesting topic. I have had some tires that I really liked and an occasional set that I didn't like. Even with various tires that I did like there are differences in handleing charteristics. Minor differences are easily adjusted to. That is how I felt about these tires. They didn't handle just like other tires. They were a little different in how they felt going straight and how they started a turn. I noticed this when I first rode them. After a few miles I didn't notice it any more and got down the road on them just fine. Over all I consider these to be a good riding tire and a good value for the money.

Well I guess the tires weren't totally gone. I rode the same roads today in reverse. Palomares, Calaveras, Hamilton, Mines and Highland. Have 2300 miles on the tires now and down to the wear bars. No slipping though. Still worked just fine.

The million dollar question now is, would/will you buy another set? (or ones like it from the same manufacturer?)

Actually it is only a one hundred and fifty two dollar question. :) Or maybe a $300 question if you consider the alternatives. :teeth

The answer is yes, with out hesitation. The tires went the miles that I was expecting and they were grippy and worked well.

Those will be my next set.

I need to start hitting up Mines/Del Puerto to wear these ones out faster :D

Question: I'm a slow rider, no really when I say slow I mean slow. My fastest lap at Buttonwillow on a 600 is something like 2:17. What compound should I use (for mostly track use with a little street riding inbetween trackdays)? I'm use to riding on Pirelli Diablo Corsas so I figure I should stick with that type of carcass.

I just ordered some "Sport Tires" yesterday. Total cost came out to $129.00 shipped to my door. I guess the knocked off the shipping cost, as it is UPS ground, and I didn't get charged.

Leonard, did they allow you to choose your carcass? I called up asking if I was allowed to and they said no.

I'll definatly post my review once I get them mounted/scrubbed in.

They told me that they use certain carcasses for each compound of tires. They told me what the different ones were. The sport tires I got were on Dunlop 208's. So you can't just choose any carcase, but they will tell you what you are getting if you choose a certain compound. Keep in mind that they mould on their own rubber in their own profile, so the 208s felt similar to 208s but not entirely the same.

I'm pretty sure Garth hasn't raced the Tomohawks yet, except for some practice days....

I've race on the Tomahawks at a WERA event at Fontana. I think I placed 4th, 6th and 7th. Actually it was only a tomahawk front. You should have seen the guys face that checks out the bikes after the race for contingency. So far my times have been consitant with other name brand tires.

I'm suprized that you were not able to order a curtian carcass. I'll call and find out if this was a mistake or not.

Garth,

What've you been running at AFM?

Really? When I told them I ordered some motorcycle tires from them, and was curious about the carcass going towards my tire, the guy basically told me "You get what's in the bin". No hint that all "sprot tires" are 208's, etc. It may have just been the guy though... He gave the vibe he didn't want to be on the phone (short answers, and quick to respond).

I called again later in the day to see if I could get the tracking number for my order. The woman who I was talking to was very polite and asked for my number because she didn't know the status and said she'd call back when she found out. No call back yet, but I understand how things can get backed up, etc.

Leonard: How long did it take for you to get your tires? Like, from day ordered to day the box was on your door step. One operator I was talking to said they thought that the tires take a few days/weeks to get out, regaurdless of the fact that they were the black rubber ones.

P.S. Remember the Orange/Black CBR you saw at the wall (about 2 weeks ago), and a kid asked you about your tomahawk tires? (probably not) That was me. I didn't relaize it was you until I saw a picture of your RC51 on barf w/ that sun decal.

I dealt with a guy named Steve and he was very helpful. Maybe those other people were having a busy day. As I recall it took about a week.

Sure, I remember you. There was another guy there on a custom painted GSXR too. Now I know who you are on here. Funny how that works.
