I hope warr77, doesn't mind, but I wanted to jump on this after I saw the video he posted.

Here is his original thread from the general section:

http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=358689

Here is the video from his helmet cam:

I wanted to get a discussion going on his accident. I'm eager to see everyones opinions on what they think could be done in a situation like that, what should have been done differently, and what to do to really minimize a situtation like that.

Aside from just looking at his specific accident, what about other hypothetical situations; IE, what if war777 was on a single lane road? Should he have lane shared? What if he was unable to laneshare? Is there ever a time where you'd have no choice but to be stopped in between cars in traffic? etc etc.

I didn't hear her skid so, I think she just didn't see him. Probably eyes off the road.
I don't think there was much he could do, it wasn't like pulling up to an intersection.
It was a sudden stop.
He had a good reaction to land on his feet.

^I pretty much feel the same way-- that he was pretty much SOL on options. I hate to think that though, that's why I'm opening up the minds of barf.

Aside from being a mind reader, at some point I think all of us come to the compromise of assumptions. We assume that it will be just another ride with maybe a near miss here and there, but never think that you'd be slammed in the back like that. We know it happens, but I mean you just can't know... I personally always check my 6, but even if you do in a situation like that, how can you be so sure you will be hit even if you are watching an upcoming car? I've seen cars come up at an alarming rate of speed only to stop in a very short distance. I try to leave room in front of me so I have a coushin to escape if needed, whether it be a small accerlation up or to the side, but in his situation I'd probably have done the same thing. It would only have been by chance if I decided to just cut lanes over instead of staying in the lane of travel. I'd figure, "hey, this car has been behind me the past few miles, she knows I'm here."

Would you ditch your bike on a 50/50 shot that you think a car is going to hit you if you have no room to do a quick acceleration? I don't know... His vid really irked me.

19th ave.,south bound, off Lincoln.following too closely, the rider couldn't change lanes.when i'm on 19th.,i make it a point to stay between cars and when i get to a red light split to the front.

hope the rider recovers fully and got all the correct info from the driver.....

I dont think that could have went any better for warr77. Look like he didnt get hurt at all and walk away totally fine.

But I dont think he made to quick of a stop...there was odd traffic in the center lane and he reacted like most of us would. Thats what break are for. Completely the drivers fault for not paying attention to the road.

You could have tried to accelerate into one of the other lanes if you saw that coming, but you could have ran into another car in the process.

Warr77 is VERY lucky and what a crazy video!

I didn't want to post this in CA because I wanted this to be a little more free and open.

edit: Mods can you please move this back to either training or general? I feel like this forum won't provide good discussion and not many will respond in the detailed manner required for the CA forum/mods-- ie precisely analyzing THIS crash etc etc

I don't think he was following to closely.
I would not have switched lanes either at that moment.
If it was me, I'm sure it would have been the same but I would have been looking at my 6 and braking and seen it coming.
The way the cars move on 19th, I would Not have changed lanes.
Warr got real lucky.
Heal up Rider.

From the video, he had no room to swerve left. Truck came to fast...

Something similar has happened to me... It sucks. Glad to see him walk away!

Done for the other thread. Carry on here.

Wish I could watch the vid, but I'm guessing war was rear ended. I often do NOT split in city stuff traffic lights are at every block, so just fold into traffic. Yes, this makes me vulnerable to a rear end, but the reality is that cagers are very good drivers around here, so I just don't worry about being rear ended.

War, if not too much a hassle, can you post up that vid again?

JUST saw the vid was reposted. OK, I'd be sweatin when the cager in front slows and stops.

I ride the No. 1 lane in that situation. No. 1 lane feels better to me.

Why can't people respect that the video was taken down for a reason? :|

Yeah, should have never made it public in the first place.. but still, not cool. :x

Not much that can be done in these situations. This could happen to any one of us anywhere and anytime we come to a stop in traffic.

Glad the rider is ok and has indisputable evidence of the accident. The car driver was clearly inattentive, is clearly at fault and her insurance carrier will be writing a big settlement check. The moto rider should be getting a brand new bike and money.

Leggy advantage?

Has anyone suggested that since the rider has the habit of putting down both feet, that the bike more or less got shot out from under him, thus sparing him much of the impact.
If he had been sitting flat assed, with one foot down, like I do, he would've absorbed much of the impact and would have been at risk for more whiplash type injury, or worse.

Long legs save lives?
