I wear jeans around town and don't feel the need to wear more. Is this foolish, quite possibly, but after 25 years of riding I'm tired of being lectured too about safety when other riders pull up in their full gear and then go tell me they are gonna go race the canyons. Good luck with that one.

Or like GSXR Kid in Danville who gave me a lecture about the worthlessness of the jeans I was wearing (going about 3/4 mile to work).

Then he promptly got on his gixxer with his way-too-baggy-leathers, and dumped it on the ground in some oil.

I helped him pick it up an explained that there is no substitute for experience, not even baggy leathers. :laughing

I pretty much exclusively wear regular jeans with no armor. To date I've crashed 5 times at speeds over ~40mph on 4 different bikes (including a nice 100mph lowside) and my worst leg injury has been a little bit of rash about the size of a quarter on my knee.

Have I been lucky? Probably.

No, it is not probably, but definitely.

100mph lowside with a quarter size piece of rash? Shit, I'd say you must be freeking Superman or something.

Bullshit.

I hesitated for a long time to post because I knew that'd be the reaction. Frankly I don't blame you.

Below is a picture of the frame slider that the bike in the 100mph lowside slid on before hitting a guardrail and essentially breaking in half (the bike isn't resting on stands, but on the engine and remains of the rear wheel and swingarm.) It obviously doesn't prove anything (and I don't intend to try and do so) I just posted it up to show that there's a small chance I might not be completely full of shit. Take from it what you will.

Have I been lucky? Probably. Do I wear armored jacket, gloves, and boots? Yep. Have all three earned their keep? Absolutely. Do I feel the need to break out my leathers or wear significant leg protection when commuting through traffic or going over twice the speed limit in the twisties? Not really.

The reason I bothered to post is that when you go all "gear nazi" on the people that need to hear it the most, you often don't come off as responsible when you freak out and say jeans are worthless and that you must wear armor/textiles/leather, you come off as a pussy (with apologies to owners of such a device.) A little realism in examining the levels of importance of your various pieces of gear would go along way in convincing Sir Squidsalot that you might be worth listening to. :2cents

IMO this has got to be one of the most irresponsible posts I've read in a long time, for all the bolded reasons above. I'm just curious, how old are you? Not to be insulting or implying you're immature here, but I'm genuinely curious from a sociology perspective as to what age groups tend to think this way. I'm already assuming you're a male.

A little realism??

The fact that you got lucky four times doesn't make leg armor any less necessary. One good impact or slide on the knee and you'll be limping or worse for life.

I rarely go without my full gear. When I do, it is in for my shin/knee pads, but still wearing the rest. I get funny looks and comments at school. But being a 10 year veteran and at typically a decade older then all of them, I couldn't give a rats ass :twofinger

I think you might want to take up a different hobby. I don't think motorcycling is a good choice for you.

Ooh, ooh! I bet he says he's 57, someone calls bullsh*t, and then he posts a picture of a wrinkle on his forehead. :laughing

(;) Just giving you a rough time SilverSilver)

So what are good jacket and over pants that are armoured..?

Go to the recommendations section. I would say just make sure the jacket fits (super tight). One of my jackets is a little loose, it's leather, and I got a little bit of road rash through it crashing at about 25mph. I personally like the A*'s overpants w/ hard armor that I have.

Me wears BMW jeans with knee and hip pads. Very comfortable. Not sure if they still make them.

I rock jeans most of the time and my dainese jacket, and full cover gloves. Sometime i'll do riding boots under the jeans. I would usually don the full leathers for a morning full of just twisties. However I had to sell my suit so it's jeans only now. :(
