Why does Costco check your receipts at the door?

I think I would go with more witnesses and call a neutral cop on scene to document and straighten out the situation.
Make it bigger with TV station coverage.
Never know who has an agenda, while being accused.

I understand the reasoning. I do not accept the behavior.

I'm more the inverse in that I object to the reasoning, but find the behavior part amusing because it's phony. I picture some manager watching the interaction from a distance thinking that their theft prevention thing is really working, but in reality it's just two people pretending to do the thing and one guy says, "cat's pajamas" and the other guy says, "potato skins" and then they nod in agreement and part ways.

This I love ...

“ in reality it's just two people pretending to do the thing and one guy says, "cat's pajamas" and the other guy says, "potato skins" and then they nod...”

Imagine if everyone objected and those employees were let go, all the old ladies out of work. Someone's mother, sister, wife no longer able to cover the cost of medical insurance. Just cause you're feeling were hurt or it cost you 10 seconds of your valuable time.

If some minimum wage person wants to check my receipt I let them. It's no biggie. It just takes a few moments. I have much bigger battles to wage.

I justify the Frys receipt check two ways: one is ther condone moto parking literally at the door, and two is the checker is so used uptight reactions both our days are made by being nice.

Costco has their reasons. And the bulk frozen fruit they have is not available elsewhere. Good place for staples and it’s five minutes away with dedicated moto parking.

I did a bit of research into this and found quite a few differing opinions and things that could be contested litigouslly. If you are in a store that does not make you sign an agreement or become a "member" to shop there, once you buy the item it is technically your personal property, and you don't have to show the receipt to anyone, no matter how nice they ask or whether they claim its a store policy or not. Of course they could always then say that you aren't allowed to shop at your store anymore, but I believe legally they have no right to force you to stop and show your receipt. I personally do it at places like Frys, but that's because I love frys and I'm a big computer nerd and would hate to not be able to shop there.

They couldn't physically stop you from leaving the store, and if they do so, they could be at risk for some legal trouble. I'm not a lawyer, but I've heard differing things kine about property rights laws and the requirements some stores do.

If you shop at places like Costco or Sam's cult, then yeah you signed an agreements saying they can search your shit and there's nothing you can really do about it. I personally think it's bullshit, and having used to work retail for way too long, they don't even really check the cart if you have lots of shit or anything that isn't expensive.

When I worked retail, I'd always just walk out after I bought lunch without showing them anything. A few of the door people were cool with it because they knew me and knew I wouldn't steal anything anyway, but a few door ladies got it up their ass that they were the "gatekeeper" or some shit. They'd get furious that I wouldn't stop and let them practically pat me down before leaving, but after a while they stopped doing anything about it.

Tldr, I believe you're not technically required to show your receipt at the door of a place that you haven't signed any "agreement" or contract with. However, they also have the right to tell you to never shop there again, and you'd likely have to go through the ordeal of making a big scene about it. I personally believe the urden if proof is on the store to catch me stealing something through means of loss prevention, not door greeter receipt checking. You don't technically have the right to dig your dirty little paws through my shit, so fuck off.

I try to be a little nicer about it though (not much) :laughing

I can't believe the vitriol some of you have about having to show your receipt and what you bought.
It's so easy to turn the 36 seconds it takes into a pleasant experience for both of you. The door monkees are just doing their job. Exchange some pleasantries and move on. It's way easier then carrying all the negativity you people have.

They’re VIOLATIN MUH FUCKIN RITES MAAAAN.

Some dude tries to stop me in the parking lot to see my receipt, yeah I’m telling dude to fuck off. Still in the store, I fully understand.

I don't get the difference here.

If he takes the trouble to go out into the parking lot, he might have probable cause (i.e. a legitimate reason). To the point where he might write down your plate and call the cops.

I would think that if you wanted to opt out due to "principle", you'd do it while you're still inside the store. Seeing as how they usually don't have a legitimate reason to stop you (unlike the parking lot example).

Sometimes I think you guys exaggerate what you would or wouldn't do in certain situations. I've never once seen anyone opt out.

No vitriol, no negativity, and no receipt check. As above, a polite "no thanks" unless the door monkey wants to make it an issue, and then it's on.

except they already can't cover the cost because walmart doesn't pay enough to do so :dunno

Let me alter the scenario slightly for you then. If you were walking down the street with a brand new TV in a box would you be cool with a cop stopping and asking to see the receipt?

Why is it hard to understand why people wouldn't voluntarily give up their rights? If you're OK with doing that, then cool, awesome for you. No skin off my back. But I can't imagine it would be hard for anyone to understand people's hesitations for giving up their rights.

For me, the disdain towards receipt checking is in the acceptance that the lowest common denominator of humanity is also the most frequent, and needs to be protected against by large corporations.

You make up this straw man about vitriolic anti-checkers and their negativity, and you call the workers lowly animals.
