Wikileaks blocked?

If they did, you'd think they'd prioritize it's release?

This stuff is all pretty ho-hum.

The real question here, is why:

'Secret' information is left on disk for 20 years, even when it has no operational relevance (Grenada? Really?)

This environment not only had access to removable media drives but a BURNER...that's also a pretty big no-no.

So, as long as the USG acts sufficiently pissed, and proxies that anger through the media...

Nobody is asking how they fucked up badly enough for Manning to not only have access to 25+ years worth of dispatches, and a BURNER, but to be able to take removable media drives in and out without them being so much as examined.

Man, I am with you. I support transparency and exposure of truth. However, I am a big believer in selling your cause to the masses and that is something that Mr. Assange could not do. That's why I replied to the post on page 11 where the poster was surprised to see so many people standing up against Mr. Assange.

If I were in charge of Wikileaks, here's what I'd do:

- Expose information that unmasks cover ups, e.g. slaughter of innocent civilians ties between politicians and mafia, etc.

- Do not expose information that is completely irrelevant just for the sake of making it public.

- Hire a PR representative that can handle interviews.

And yes, letting a private access 25 years of information is a big fuck up on our side.

Now now we can't share matters of National Security with you :|

What makes you think foreign governments don't already have this (and more) data in their hands? This in addition to the outsourcing of sensitive work overseas is creating bigger rivals that know more about us than we do about them. Not to mention the loss of our face all over the world. Frack!

Assange is on some kind of anti-US crusade. Some folks have left his organization due to his antagonistic leadership style and not paying enough attention to non-US whistle blowers. Some Germans have already started their own version of Wiki-Leaks focused on Germany.

I wonder if we can have someone leak documents on the prison industry in California.

From what I have read so far, not much of national security stuff... It is funny to see how all the major corps are caving in to the US gov pressure. so much for democracy...

I think the DNS and hosting providers caved more to DOS attacks. Who wants to host a lightning rod?

His financial service providers cutting him off is another story.

I don't see the point in releasing cables detailing strategic vulnerabilities regardless of how obvious you think they are. This isn't a video of a chopper blowing away reporters, or some kind of cover up, or anything people ought to know about the government. It appears he's just stirring the pot. That's not a noble cause, to hell with him.

I feel like im watching the final demise of our countries philiosphical standings and values.

hell even glen beck today said the julian has been setup on these charges.

Maybe so, but when a guy distributes a "poison pill," "thermonuclear" file to extort governments into not arresting him, he officially makes the transition from journalist to asshole complete.

I suspect he was more worried more about "disappearing" or being taken out. If I were in his shoes, I'd do the same thing.

I was sort of OK with leaking stuff about coverups or controversial government actions, but the things he's putting out now are undermining that cause faster than anything. It's basically the equivalent of stealing videos from your neighbors house because he's got dog fighting in the basement, but at the same time you publish the video of him having sex with his wife because you're "exposing his secrets."

You think he's a complete asshole for having an insurance policy? How exactly is he extorting the government?

He only releases the code if he's dead or the site is completely shut down, hardly what you present it as.

The conditions under which he will release the code are ambiguous, hardly as clear as you present them. You don't trust our government. I don't trust this egotistical asshole.

He's attracting exactly the consequences one can expect for illegally obtaining and publishing classified information. It doesn't matter that the BARF Illuminati can't see what's so damaging about the material. This is not a journalistic expose on government corruption; it's targeted release of information intended to embarrass countries, harm relations and compromise assets. He's not a journalist; he's an activist.

Hey guess what, he can't release a code if he's dead. That means the code is already out there.

Based on Assange's latest threat, I'll agree with you here.

All journalists who release classified information with the point of exposing corruption or changing policy and activists by definition.

I think the point of releasing the "strategic" interests cable was to highlight areas which the US would go out of their way to control. These places weren't only in the US, but all over the world.

You know, I am surprised only by one thing -- Pakistan's reaction. The state attempted to block Wikileaks, but the judge refused on the grounds of democratic progress:

“The secret information may cause trouble for some personalities in Pakistan but it will be good for progress of the nation in the long run. We, as a nation, should have courage to tolerate and digest criticism and live with it.”

On the one hand, a country not known for human rights does not have an issue with Wikileaks while our home-grown Joe Liberman (I-CT) wants to see if New York Times can be held accountable for working with the activist group... Fucking wow :)
