My OG mend has started.

Since you have so much free time (forced no less) maybe spend that time doing something you always wanted but never had time for.

Learn a new language

Invest in stocks and keep an eye on them throughout the day

Learn to play guitar

Explore spirituality and meditation

Play chess and other board games with visitors and hospital staff

Practice magic tricks and card tricks from YouTube vids

Organize your photos into albums and add captions

Learn origami

Volunteer for an organization that reaches out to nursing homes or shut ins who are lonely and need someone to talk to

Some of these sound a little hokey but you’ve got all day, right?
That point is to remain as active as you can, if not physically then mentally.

Just saw this thread and the recovery you are making. Best wishes for more of the same. Just gone through a health crisis of own. As you are demonstrating recovery is about a positive mental attitude and bloody-minded persistence - assuming the medical stuff is taken care of. If nothing else, a lifetime of riding Moto's develops both.

Budman: if you have never read “The Prophet” by Khalil Gibran, you absolutely must. It’s a very short book, full of insight and wisdom. Once you read it, you will keep it for the rest of your life.

Here is an online version:

Look at the table of contents to see the subjects that are covered. Unless you are dead, you will find things that speak to you.

At the moment it is a bit hard to focus on stuff but that will change soon. I appreciate the ideas. When I am home life should be a bit more grounded as far as things to consume the boredom and the Mrs will be pushing hard to focus more on work and the never ending task of earning a buck.

I was about to start doing some side bar project editing for the moto movie I am 95% done with but that is going to be sidelined due to some circumstances beyond my control. I hate failing but in this case I think it is the right call.

So….
I will continue to plan my retirement ride for sure.
Given the extra time I will dig into a bit more of the history I would think and more importantly learn how to do routes on Rever. There is a ton to do there that is of major interest.

On the subject of motivation and smaller bikes....
I just picked up a mint 500mile Duke 390 two weeks ago. I have already put 1000 miles on it and have started the inevitable journey down the "what can I improve" rabbit hole.

I was wondering about the initial news of a broken hip, that got stuck in my mind.
Has your injury been downgraded with a broken femur, less time for recovery?
or, more time to heal?
That ball & socket hip joint, looks longer term.

Jimmy Stewart stuck at home, all he had was a back window, for entertainment,
& Hitchcock for imagination.

Keep on keeping on, sounds like good progress. As others suggested lots of online gaming options to pass the time, chess, etc against others or a computer. Not my bag, but I'd probably try it if I was laid up

The Dr only compared to a hip replacement. They said the femur takes 33% longer in my case. Still waiting for the X-Rays.

@N4teTheGreat I am definitely not an online gaming dude. Heck I am really not a lap top dude which is limiting on its own. At least when I get home I can use my Apple laptop vs the Dell I need to use for work crap.

this afternoon after my two PT’s and a work meeting the Mrs is bringing shaving stuff. Looking forward to halting the grizzly Adams progression.
I have never been so scruffy!

@NorCalBusa Well. Stanford has passed and I am not a creeper so you are out of luck. :laughing

Just killed it in PT.
Got the full stair licked up and down.
Down is still more of a challenge but doubled what I did the first time and that matches up to my home. Kind of stoked.

Then on the walk back just used the cane for the last 100ft. That bodes well for getting back to work.

This is the first real “up” feeling in the 3-1/2 weeks of this BS.

I'm not familiar with either. :laughing
::Port
No shave 'till yur all healed up! :afm199
I feel ya there and kind of would like to experience it 6 more months would have me doing the full Jesus look.

…but I know the Mrs won’t feed me if I keep getting food caught in my facial hair. :laughing

well that would be one way to stay on track diet-wise... :laughing

PT 2 kicked my ass in terms of pain.
After a bit of learning the “dress yourself tools” it was cane work. Simple little things like stepping over a curb when you throw in the need to really balance makes the entire leg really work together.

That meant the kit in my quad was taxed and it fricking hurt. All those metal bits moving around and making noise is the suck.

Back to my room and in pain. Yikes.
The knee to the hip all are throbbing noticeably.
Why the knee?? :dunno.

The kind of pain where I just want to sleep.
However they are very strict with pain meds and I am at the end of a 4 hour cycle so I have to wait.

No pain no gain applies here.

Wishing you all the best in your recovery, Bud.
My advise is, slow down and don't rush it. Unfortunately, guys our age don't heal as fast as we once did. Trying to rehab like we did 25 or 30 years ago is a recipe for complications and/or re-injury. I think of it like welding... you want a nice deep weld that is stronger than the surrounding material, not a quick shallow pass that going to fail again in the same place. Now is the time to take it slow and go easy.

Pretty sure when you use any muscle unusually, it gets tired quickly. No doubt you are doing some compensatory leans/twists/turns in reaction to pain and what are now unusual positions. It'll pass. I'd go for a hot tub to warm up prior & after. With a nurse of course, to supervise.

Knee is adapting to new mechanics. The muscles between hip and knee were likely affected by both the injury and the fix. Sometimes the fix is a different height than the original. If knee pain persists they can check that out with a standing scanogram.
Also, AI is making me send this…Guess this won’t be necessary now…kudos to you!

@Rtmac I hear you. PT2 was what they required of me. Certainly do not want to complicate things by being foolishly aggressive.

@NorCalBusa I wish Medicare covered professional athlete level rehab. IE: Massage and heat besides the ice. I really do think some heat and massage would help the muscles get warmed and with the better blood flow heal a touch faster.
Hot tub dialed down a bit would be pretty awesome. Closely supervised. :teeth :laughing

@easy wind Agreed on the knee. The muscles that surround and support it are still waking up. Those brain signals need to connect both ways.

Had a nice visit from M0t0_ryder. Thanks for the shirt John. I am sure the PT crew will be impressed. :laughing

Oof. I didn’t know you got injured. I’m glad you’re out of the rehab facility, and on the road to recovery. Crashing sucks, even (especially?) when it’s in your own home…stay rad and heal up! 🌟🖤💪

If I would of only known earlier.
I can (sort of) help with two of those three!
Would you like me to make another short visit?
(I'd suggest getting a OK from Dr or PT folks)

Heat pad and percussion massager.

Sorry, no hot tub.
