CEO of Barilla Pasta tries to flush company down toilet (Boycott Barilla)

Making buying decisions based on the political posture of the owners is kinda silly, as the only difference between this guy and any other business owner is that this guy was stupid enough to public state his prejudices.

It's always so strange to see idiots like this guy. His job is to promote the features/benefits of the company product. Instead the snafus go like this:

"At Barilla, we use the best ingredients. Our pasta tastes great, and oh BTW we hate homos." :wtf

Doesn't mean the other guys you take your money to don't have similar or worse prejudices.

Whenever this shit comes up, I think about the Godfather scene about business vs. personal. My purchases are a business transaction, based on business decisions. Just because I wouldn't invite someone to my house for dinner, doesn't mean I won't do business with them. If you excluded every one with differing views from you from your transactions, you'd be transacting alone a lot of the time.

Agreed.

well at least he didn't try to ban open carry in stores his product has been sold in, then anyone complaining woulda just been uppity...

“I would never do [a commercial] with a homosexual family, not for lack of respect, but because we don’t agree with them,” the company chairman told Italian radio Wednesday evening.
Did people really read the quote?

If he had said 'I will never do business with', or 'I will never eat with' or a variety of other things, I could see the response, but this just seemed like a simple, honest and benign statement.

Much better than the politicians who cater to the Hispanic vote during election time then turn around and shit on them at all other times with the laws that they pass and things that they say.

I don't advocate useless boycotts, but pray tell what is the difference between "Disagreeing" with them and hating them?

They want the same rights as other people. This guy doesn't think they should have those rights. He's a hateful bigot. But no, he just "Disagrees" with them to the point where he feels the need to publicly announce it.

He sounds like quite the loving guy.

It's very easy. I don't agree with your post but that doesn't mean I hate you. He has a different belief structure but that doesn't mean he hates gay people or says anything about gay rights.

what would an appropriate form of corporate punishment be that would not result in layoffs? (unrelated to this topic)

Fine the CEOs personally :teeth They will start behaving once they are millions in the hole and can no longer afford their gold-plated LearJet.

Seriously. Half the people on BARF spend their day looking for anyone with a hint of anti-gay so they can be one of the cool 26 people that joined the latest boycott.

So which pasta company does all the gay family commercials? The guy supports gay marriage but he's already a "hateful bigot." Give me a fucking break.

what is the difference

So, nobody goes to Chik-Fil-A or buys anything from mormons, either?

Non-news.

I can't remember the last time I saw a Chick-Fil-A, but I would probably eat it if I was hungry.

Not sure if you've noticed, but voting doesn't seem to do much. I'm of the belief that voting with my dollars might be more productive. I'm especially adamant about supporting local bricks and mortar.

Any links to verify the claim that he supports gay marriage?

And why are you so upset about someone spending money where they want? Is it really "trendy" in your eyes to support businesses that align with your world view?
Pasta is pasta to me, but if one is owned by a motorcyclist, or someone that supports legalization, I'd probably pick them over another.
If one is owned by someone that openly denounces gays, I'd probably pick another box to buy.

It's not a big trendy 'thing', it's a small choice. I don't expect to cause the company to fold due to the absence of my business, it's not that big of a deal.

Through a spokesperson, the company said that its executive was merely trying to communicate "simply that the woman plays a central role in a family" and that the brand "embraces anyone."

:nchantr

:rofl

Barilla is definitely my favorite boxed pasta and without question (after 20 years) I'll continue to consume it. Getting a decent al dente from a dry pasta is tough, but they do it well:thumbup
