When did people start forgetting the the age old saying sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me?
Humor takes on many forms. Some is very clean, wholesome, and very PC. Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno, and *cough*Bill Cosby have all been unoffensive with how they try to make people laugh. Some humor is super edgy and usually frequently calls on racial stereotypes, vulgarity, and such to draw the laughs. Case in point, Mel Brooks’ masterpiece Blazing Saddles. Same can be said of stand up acts like Chris Rock or Louis CK.
Different strokes for different folks. Don’t want to hear Chris Rock drop the n-bomb 35 times in his act, or see the exploits of the town of Rock Ridge in Blazing Saddles? Or maybe Ted Stryker’s “drinking problem” in Airplane offends you because alcoholism is a serious thing and shouldn’t be made light of? Don’t fucking subject yourself to it if you actually get hurt by words and/or acting in a film or tv show. Perhaps your church group or whatever can tell you when Jeff Foxworthy’s act is coming back to town. That should be safe for your tender sensitive self.
Seinfeld is a rare bird, but for the most part, PC humor is fucking lame to me. I’m a god damn grown up. I can tell the difference between a joke and actual malice. So forgive me if I much prefer to laugh my ass off at Mongo punching his horse instead of immediately picking up the phone....oh I mean going on Twitter and tweeting @PETA and trying to get Blazing Saddles removed from existence because of a joke that someone didn’t think was funny.
I’m not a big fan of the term “snowflake” because people are so quick to call people that. But I can see why it gets thrown around so much these days with so many people who seem to have been making a career out of being offended.
