2016 AFM club questions

I'd never do that, but Troy Bayliss used to.

But yeah, you'll need to remove your kickstand.

Does anyone ride to the paddock on a race weekend?

I did this for PTT on April 27th on my Ninja 300, and I had a blast! For various reasons, I live in the city - can't own a truck/trailer/parking spots.

At the track I disabled my rear brake and took off my mirrors in less than 10 minutes. I'm reading through the AFM guidelines, and they look similar to the track day regulations. The exception is the safety wiring required on the oil pan, front and rear wheels, etc. Another piece is the removal of the sidestand. I don't see how I could ride to the track without a sidestand, and park my bike. Everything else seems OK.

How important is the removal of the sidestand from the bike? I'll likely not place in the club 300 class, so I doubt other racers would complain.

A LOT of people thought I was crazy for riding to a track day, so I'm not at all concerned that people will think I'm generally crazy for riding to a race.

If the kickstand is a major issue, then I may do the feel-like-a-pro bike for the September race school. But for $650 rental on a race weekend, I could buy some cool stuff for my 300.

Is there anything else I'm missing on riding to a race? I'm just trying to have some fun out there, and enjoy the racing.

In your situation, I'd say FLAP is the way to go.

Is your streetbike safety wired? Does it have number plates? A bellypan?

Sounds like the FLAP is the way to go.

Also, I took the rear tail light out to disable the brake light. Disabling the rear brake does sound a little crazy :)

I could safety wire, get number plates, a belly pan, and take a 'foldable' rear stand with me in my backpack, But it seems all too unnecessary.

Thanks for the tips guys!

Sounds to me like you need a buddy. Someone to haul rearstand, and maybe gear for you. I put my sidestand on between rounds to aid moving the bike around the garage, it's usually just 2 bolts.

Or go with the dedicated race bike, with tire warmers, stands, pit crew, and a much better guarantee you're ready to race each round. You'll be competitive before you know it and having a setup more apt to keep up with you is a stronger long term solution.

The safety wire and belly pan are for tech, Also do you have your racing license. If not you need to sign up for the NRS school on saturday. Also don't forget about renting a transponder.

X2 Transponders or only TranX260?

I read on a different thread that MyLaps rents transponders for about $150/year or so. I went to the site to check it out but found that they now only offer subscriptions for X2 and a note that says "The X2 Transponder series replaces the original TranX transponders"

Is the X2 supported by and usable at AFM or are we required to use only the older TranX260 transponders?

I haven't found an annual rental subscription for the TranX260 :(

the AFM rents transponders, don't recall the price, but think its an option when you sign up for your races on TrackIntel. want to say $10 or there abouts

Transponder rentals at AFM are $60/pop. You're WAY better off with the MyLaps rental if you plan to do more than 2 rounds. AFM rentals good in pinch, not a long term solution.

Not sure on the X2 vs 260 - maybe talk to mylaps and see if they can answer if the transponder will work with the 260 system...

That transponder does work with the 260 system. It is a way for AMB to continue their revenue stream since they no longer sell the old style that worked forever.

Might as well just pick them up at Rd1 at this point. Save the club a couple bucks in postage

What about the ones not making round one. .. i was told early march too. I look forward to my packet . So i guess i will keep doing the disappointed johnny walk of shame every day its NOT here from the mail box back into house

Food for thought..

If I remember correctly, you always get an opportunity to do that last practice on Saturday even if don't sign up for Saturday morning practice.

I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong :)

Hey Mark,
Not Correct. We get the last practice on Saturday because we have a race on Saturday, F40LT. You get one practice session on the day of your race/s.

So this is kind of a ridiculous question but I am going to ask anyways. Is it possible to have a qualifying session to set grids for races? Either its own session or perhaps a best time taken from practice?

We do this already. Haven't you seen FP gridded?

Ah - you mean for the rest of the classes, too? The difficulty is matching times with bikes and classes. How do you establish times for someone racing two bikes, say a 650 and 1000, so that the proper practice time is used for the proper race. FP is easy because you are just looking for the fastest time. Other classes not as easy.

Yes, this would be for the rest of us which is probably the majority of the club. My suggestion would be bike-specific transponders; however, I understand this would raise costs. The whole endeavor would likely raise the cost of racing which is a negative but I figured I would ask anyways to see what people thought.

just pick it up at Rd2 :dunno: The packet is just a symbol of the great joy we are apart of in racing with the AFM. I'm excited to go racing too:thumbup
