2024 Formula 1 thread ***spoilers***

It's Europe. Do they ever get much of this stuff right?
Every race we don't complain about? I'd guess they majorly screw up only a handful of times a year, which is actually a high success rate with the long calendar.

Is there anybody outside of those stewards who think that was a good penalty (besides Max and Ferrari fans, strange bedfellows)?
MBS (FIA Pres). Rumor is the penalties are part of his whole deal.

IIRC, the Stewards are supposed to be an independent body that consistently has new members. I'm not sure how much I believe that rumor. But you never know how much the FIA follows their own rules.

I find it incredibly ironic that Max is crying about getting penalized a position (which actually put him in a much better position for turn 1) for slowing Russell down on Russel's qualifying attempt, knowing Max it was an intentional strategy to mess up Russel's qualifying run. He pretty much doesn't miss a trick when it comes to ensuring that he wins, not a single one.

The only races we don't complain about are boring....and that's probably worse.

I think (am not 100% sure) that Russell was on a warm up lap (not a qualifying lap). He was trying to get more heat in his tires and did not realize that Max was trying to get a gap to the car in front of him. However, Max should not have been on the racing line at that point.

The warm up lap is the entry into the lap. Verstappen screwed up Russell's attempt to get up to speed with his shit, and as I said before, Verstappen doesn't miss a trick to gain an advantage.

Oh...I agree that Max doesn't miss a trick, but I do not think he messed up Russell's qualifying lap as the incident happened 3 corners from the end of the warm up lap. On this track, you do not need a huge run into the last corner to get good exit speed onto the front straight. I heard something that the penalty was for going too slow on the warm up lap (Max took too much time from pit exit to the start of his lap). I could be wrong though.

Don't get me wrong, Max is an AssHat.

Even if it's more than a turn away, Russell had to take strong evasive actions to not hit Max, that would have messed up his qualifying lap. His head wouldn't have been in the right place for a perfect lap after something like that.

Downsizing for 2026.

And.... maybe, just maybe we'll be able to see a few "passes" at Monaco! :laughing

It doesn’t matter how large the cars are when the best following distance is over 1sec. We got closer racing for 1yr with new regs, then the teams figured out how to make dirty wakes again. I’ll be shocked if the FIA can stop that cycle.

The 2026 cars are 10cm wider and have 40cm longer wheelbase than a 2006 car. 10cm extra width, meh. The extra wheelbase is mostly due to needing space for the hybrid system and a fuel tank to last the whole race - I won’t be expecting that number to decrease any further.

Hamilton got absolutely screwed by getting something knocked out onto the track by Hulkenberg getting stuck under his car for his qualifying lap.
In most other sports, something like that would get taken into consideration and they'd cut you a break, but not in F1. Meanwhile, Hulkenberg who had gone off track and knocked the marker into the track ended up 4th.
Ferrari is going to be very hard pressed to get more points than the McLarens who locked out the front row with LeClerc starting at the very back.

I thought that was Magnussen? Kinda a bummer way for Hamilton to start his last race with the team. Just real bad luck there.

Regarding those steering wheels, I wonder how hard the mental challenge will be for Hamilton? I'm sure he has built up some serious muscle memory in the Mercedes over the years.

I love seeing the McLaren drivers 1 & 2, I hope they will kill it in the race and give McLaren a very well deserved constructors championship!

Until they pay for dedicated stewards to travel to the races, it’ll be virtually impossible to get consistency.

MBS being just another Middle Eastern spoilt brat running the show as a dictator (natural instincts n all) isn’t helping.

This is the brother btw for those wondering https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sultan_Ahmed_bin_Sulayem

Shitty move by Verstappen, Piastri really got screwed on that. Usually, when there are title contender's, the other drivers ensure that they aren't fucking around with them and impacting the championship, but not Max. Then he whined about it, so sick of his shit.

Then the FIA continued to try to hand the Championship over to Ferrari after their shitty move in the last race to take away all of Norris points with that penalty. I'm glad that Norris prevailed and Ferrari didn't get their gift like Max did 3 years ago.

Exciting race. Something happening nearly every lap. It was crazy to see fortunes change so much. LeClerc made it look like he was playing the F1 video game on that opening lap. Bottas’ start spot was so good but it came to nothing. Of course Max punts a McLaren.

I was praying for a VSC for Lewis’ stop when Bottas hit Kmag. 10sec saved - ooo what could have been.

The disscrepancies in pace when switching to Hards is interesting. Gasly was way slower. VCARB tried one in FP and was still slower. McLaren gained a tiny bit.

WTF is up w Perez and retiring after a spin. Last weekend he supposedly burned the clutch when rejoining. Same this time? Is their clutch made of paper mache? Is Perez’s clutch hand useless? Surely he has to be out of a ride now!

Franco got a flat from Oscar running into the back of him. And given the lockup, Oscar was not fully in control of the car. A penalty seems obvious.

There used to be some discussion about whether or not the outcome of an infraction should factor into the penalty. Say if Franco didn’t get a flat, should Oscar be let off? IIRC, it was decided that the outcome should be irrelevant. This still seems to be in place, even though the flat is the first thing I said.
