3rd row SUV choices?

Chances of wagons this size coming back?

Slim to none. Wagons aren't being offeref in the US anymore with fewer and fewer exceptions... the appetite for SUVs is too great.

Sucks, i love wagons.

Sign me up for a Mazda 6 wagon with Manual tranny. :thumbup

Chances of wagons this size coming back? I learned to drive on this bad boy. The rear facing seats were dope! My research shows it's not illegal either, just not car companies really make them anymore.

Tesla is the only one that still does. There was a news article recently where someone called the cops thinking a dude stuffed his kids in the trunk. :laughing

... love those things, much better looking than the sedan.

I don't use the 3rd row seat in my 2014 Explorer but in an overall opinion I REALLY like the Explorer, Ford has really come along way in quality and customer service. Bought mine using the Costco plan, no haggling or stress just pick the model you want and they give you a price.

edit: I see got a Volvo, never mind and congrats.

Did you get it for invoice price (before tax, license, etc.)?

Bumping this - Rob, what's your thoughts on the new MDX now? Sister's eyeballing one to replace her old Q5.

Also, how's the XC90 doing Stan?

god damn I wish wagons would make a comeback in the US.

Seriously if you don't like any of these you're basically a terrible person.

Three words...hybrid or nothing.

So the MDX got its mid cycle refresh for 2017. The new grille is also showing up on the 2018 TLX sedan releasing this week. Like it or not, the "diamond pentagon" or whatever it's being called is here to stay for some time.

One of my biggest gripes about the MDX is the ZF sourced 9 speed automatic. I hate it. It's also in my TLX. Damn I hate it. Honda just released an in house designed and manufactured 10 speed in the new Odyssey. Perhaps it sees its way into the 2018 MDX.

Or...you can get a 7 speed DCT transmission which works great. It comes in the new 2017 MDX Sport Hybrid. You get a slightly smaller 3.0L V6 (regular MDX is 3.5), but you also get three electric motors. Two of which are in the rear and drive the rear wheels in lieu of a propeller shaft driven conventional differential. These electric motors provide instant torque and can even reverse torque when needed. This takes Acura's torque vectoring SH-AWD system to another level. This system is very similar to the hybrid setup in the $200k NSX supercar. In the MDX hybrid, you also get active shocks so it rides and handles better too. The battery and guts for the hybrid system are all underneath and do not intrude or compromise any space in the cabin at all. At city street speeds, the thing runs in EV quite a bit, so you get quite a mpg boost over the regular MDX.

It's more powerful, rides and handles better, is quieter, gets 6mpg average better, and in a nutshell better in every way than the regular MDX. And the best part? Compared to a regular MDX SH-AWD, it's only $1500 more on the MSRP. I call that the biggest no brainer ever.

The catch is that they are super limited for the rest of the 2017 model year. My dealer will only get 7. Our first one sold in less than 48 hours. Our next two are pre sold already. Another catch? Full sticker price for these, while you can probably get $4-5k off the sticker of a regular MDX. So it really is actually more than a $1500 premium isn't it. 2018 will bring much more supply and probably production will be moving from Alabama to Ohio so fit and finish will get a bump up. If you can hang in there for the 2018 model, which will be around August, then great. Otherwise, if you want a 2017 hybrid, it's certainly possible but most dealers have already ordered most if not all of their allocation. So if one shows up and is open to buy, you'll have to take whatever color and configuration it is.

What don't you like about the transmissions? Have they been having problems?

The 9 speed? It's trash. Lots of shift quality issues. Two software updates for shift quality and engagement concerns and it's only marginally better. FCA has had even more issues with their version of the ZF 9HP. We've seen some reliability issues right off the bat too. The heat exchanger leaks and lets engine coolant into the transmission fluid and it's a total loss. Speaking of that fluid, it's a special ZF spec fluid that costs $55/qt. My biggest complaint about the thing is when you're doing 65 and cruising in 9th, and you punch it to make a pass? The time it takes you to read this sentence in its entirety is probably equal to the time it takes to make the downshift and give you 3rd. The benefits of this transmission are that's it's incredibly compact and because of its dog clutches, it can take a tremendous amount of abuse.

Our old 6 speed auto was totally fine. But they had to keep up with the Jones and have more gears. The hilarious part? A 2015 MDX with the 6 speed gets equal to or sometimes even slightly better mileage than the 2016 with the new 9 speed. Haven't driven a Odyssey with the new Honda built 10 speed, but I gotta imagine it's way better.

Like I said, that hybrid model lets you dodge the bullet and you get a special Honda built (in Japan) 7 speed DCT transmission that's fantastic. Even without the hybrid hoopla, I'd pay the $1500 to just get the 7DCT.

Interesting. I've had a couple updates for the ZF 8 speed in my Durango but it wasn't drastic just some harsh downshifting while braking sometimes.

That was also one for the ZF 9HP. Owners would feel a surge forward when the transmission was downshifting as you were coming up to a stop.

The primary reason for the update on your 8 speed was for a automatic shift to Park interlock logic. You know...the reason Anton Yelchin (the guy who was Chekhov in the new Star Treks) died because his Jeep GC ghostrided right into him.

Even for the durangos? They have a different shifter from the keeps it's not a push button park.

Same trans though. I'm sure there were other calibration changes too. And probably not the last software update it'll get either.

Yeah mine's been through 2 updates and still surges a little when braking. It's only 5 > 4 and 2 > 1 though. Not really too noticeable to passengers anymore but I still feel it, and it's more pronounced in traffic if you were starting to accelerate and then have to brake and the gear is in that range. Under that circumstance it's pronounced enough to jolt like you just got tapped by the car behind you. It's my one big gripe about the car.
