3rd row SUV choices?

So the MDX got its mid cycle refresh for 2017. The new grille is also showing up on the 2018 TLX sedan releasing this week. Like it or not, the "diamond pentagon" or whatever it's being called is here to stay for some time.

I like it. Good riddance to the shield.

We were just given a Highlander with 310K on the clock. Apart from some paint peeling off, and the crappy original sound system, you'd think it was a coupla years old. Amazing durability.

Seats 7 comfortably, albeit the 2 rear seats are made for kids/shorties.

Still useful space behind when 3rd row is up, but not enough for going camping with 7, and gear. Easily enough for camping with 5, and gear - with that back seat down.

Handles better than it should, mileage is pretty good. The 4WD got tested for realz this winter in all the mud and made it possible for us to get out when our 2WD cars couldn't even manage to get to the main road (we live in the SC hills).

I was expecting to hate it, and have been pleasantly surprised - this is an 04 with very high mileage.

If you're going to purchase new Pete, lease then, purchase.

Asking all this on behalf of my sister. I'm pretty happy with my new Durango. She's debating between buying / leasing a new MDX or going with buying a CPO 2014/15. Pitched the XC90, too expensive...Durango, too ugly...she likes the MDX.

If you have kids, minivan. I now own two, a Honda and a Toyota.

Confirm with Rob, but the two MDX's we have haven't been very wonderful in quality. That's only two examples, though.

What do you think about leasing one for like 3 years vs buying?

If you're going to purchase new Pete, lease then, purchase.

Definitely buy it out after the lease. Even if you don't want it anymore. Residuals on the MDX and RDX seem to be $4-5k less than actual market value. If anything, buy it just to flip it and pocket that money. We love it when people turn in the RDX or MDX lease. We make an absolutely terrible shitload of money reselling them as a CPO.

Roll tide! Fucking Alabama man. When production moved from Canada to Lincoln, AL for the 2014 MDX (all Odyssey platformed vehicles made there now), fit and finish took a major hit. Panel gaps and paint quality got so bad, I have a hard time deciding if it's all factory or got collision repair sometimes now.

So like I said earlier, they're pulling MDX production out of there and moving it to East Liberty, OH (which makes the RDX/CR-V and has much better quality control there) for the 2018 model year.

So....yes on leasing a 2017, hybrid or not?

Don't they own the plant? Why can't they standardize their own quality levels between plants?

This part is even better. They haven't standardized it even in the same plant. So at HMA (Honda Manufacturing of Alabama) they have two lines. Went I went through there a couple years ago, only one line had a fully robotic paint shop. The other line still had humans involved. Funny part is neither one is really better. Human line I see more blems in the paint (dust, runs, etc). Robot line I see paint coverage issues like tiger stripes on some of the metallic colors if you catch the right light and angle.

Bumping this - Rob, what's your thoughts on the new MDX now? Sister's eyeballing one to replace her old Q5.

Also, how's the XC90 doing Stan?

The XC90 is great! No problems. Get's real good mileage since we have the T8 plug-in one. Of course our original budget almost doubled ;)

god damn I wish wagons would make a comeback in the US.

Seriously if you don't like any of these you're basically a terrible person.

Oh and Stan, the E55 AMG Wagon has a 3rd row of seats :teeth

When shopping for my latest DD, I highly considered a wagon, but there is nothing new out there!!

I wish I had gotten an '07 or '08 A4 Avant when they were still sold here. Really regret getting the standard 4 door sedan. :(

Also by the time you're ready to get rid of your car the Panamera Wagon will be out :drool

I know I say this a lot, but no more cars!!! i'm very happy with the current stable.

That looks really bad though. Porsche can't design a 4 door sedan/wagon to save their lives. Stick with the converted Audi SUVs as cash flow generators and well built sports cars.

E63: ugh. Great motor, not great mechanicals.
