Any (4-wheel) Overland types in here?

I'm always conflicted when I see those videos. The gear queer in me is squeeing-out but the minimalist in me is also aghast at what those folks are bringing out there. It's just too much crap. I can understand it if they were full-time overlanders and they're traveling the globe and living out of their trucks but some of those folks are just weekend warriors like me. They're literally bringing the kitchen sink out there.

It always cracks me up to see the looks on people's when folks ask about my "kitchen setup" and I pull out this little box with a 30-yr old Coleman single burner, along with single-serving spam, tuna packets and instant rice. I don't cook gourmet meals at home, why the hell am I going to cook gourmet meals on the trail. Plus I do intermittent fasting so my food needs are very minimal when I'm camping. Yea, my camp meals aren't always Instagramable and I don't care.

I'm the same when it comes to the food. I bought a two burner unit awhile ago, but can't recall a single time I've used both burners at once. So in thinking downsizing it to butane single. (Still don't like how tall Coleman single burner setups are)

Thanks for the MesoJDM link now I have another build to read. :x

Like what he did with the Grom.

For those who don't want to go hunting for it like I had to :x

I just aquired a home built overland style trailer. Smittybuilt tent on top, awning, water tank, sink, pump, wheel chock for the bike. It's got an awesome solar panel, battery, and inverter. Really well done setup, that I plan to tweak a little. It's just at the edge of what my Land Rover can tow, but I like not having to break down camp to go wheelng or riding.

What did he build it on?

Got a buddy that's doing his DIY overland trailer on an old military trailer but the damn thing weighs like 3000lbs empty. Not sure if that's the ideal platform to build on.

I've been following iamjake on YouTube for a while (he's about 10-states into a 50-state overland trip on a jeep) and he was running a military trailer for a while too and he had nothing but issues with it until he sold it a couple of weeks ago.

Back half of a compact pickup wouldn't be bad. Toss the bed, build a little flatbed and go from there.

This started as a 4x6 utility trailer. He built a rack and mounted the tent on top. Sides fold down and awning pulls out over the sink/galley. The tent folds on the opposite side to create a nice patio.

Welp, summer is almost over so I can go back to enjoying nature again. I'm one of those odd ducks that was born and raised in a tropical climate but absolutely can not stand the heat.

Aris (wannabe) and I was out on the Notellem river over the weekend and I decided to pop into Yosemite for a day since it was so close.

Are you allowed to overland in something besides a Tacoma?

I very rarely see kitted out Silverado 1500s or F150s, both hugely popular trucks.

My immediate thought was that the Tacoma is smaller and more capable off-road, but I don't really have any factual reason.

It’s not unheard of, I know a dude that has a Ram Power Wagon all kitted our for overlanding, but most folks prefer mid-sized trucks for that purpose (lighter, more off-road capable, and small enough to fit into Jeep trails). Even my long bed Tacoma is a bit of an anomaly. Plus the reason Tacomas are so popular is the huge aftermarket support available for it, no other brand can compare.

Things are looking up in the in the mid-sized truck world though. The new Ranger is looking good and I’m seeing more Colorados getting into the scene. That rumored ZR2 Bison looks like it’s aimed directly at the overland scene. https://www.web2carz.com/autos/news/7219/it-looks-like-chevy-may-build-a-colorado-zr2-bison

Bison ZR2 is real, Chevy advert from yesterday

Ahh, size, makes sense.

I really like that the mid-size truck segment has gotten larger in size. The older Tacos and Rangers were way too small for me.

I'll be picking up a used, mid-2000s Silverado 1500 or F150 in October. The Tacomas and Coloadros are very nice, but way too expensive for what I'm looking to spend. Looking to turn make my truck camp ready, but I'm not likely to go the overland route. But I'm tempted to go spend double what I need to and build a Tacoma out, cause they (like yours) look fucking cool.

Turn radius is a problem with large pickups. :wow

Ford makes an off road oriented large pickup, however.

Well, "Overlanding" itself is a term adopted by city folk to describe dusty road driving. It generally requires a Tacoma, internet access and a camera.

Love this thread. I've got a 99 Dodge Ram 3/4 ton. I don't have it set up like a full expedition rig since I use it for work as well. I did install front and rear lockers and just a leveling kit with decent shocks. It is beat up from following smaller rigs through trails. I bought a few strands of the LED fairy lights you posted up somewhere. That was worth the purchase. Keep up with the photos and updates.
