BARF amatuer musician "jam" meet - Fri, Feb 13, 09

For Mike: Is 7 pm still good for people to arrive?

speaking of that... What time would be a good time to leave my place in order to get there maybe 30 mins early in case my navigation system gets me lost?
I live in Modesto so its around 80 miles away, and its on a Friday so I don't know how bad traffic will be.

I don't think I'll be heading back home that same night though, that is too much time being spent going back and forward, and I'll probably want to go kill some time at stores on saturday. I think I'll just bring a big blanket and camp out in my car for the night.

People can start showing up as early as 6.

groupies or no :confused

:later

:laughing

OK, for reals... Groupies are welcome. :)

Everyone, just be aware that it's COLD in the warehouse. Those playing are sure to generate some heat, but everyone should dress warm.

From my experience with hootinanny's once the beer and weed kicks in, things mellow out and all the planning goes out the window. This is a good thing...informal jams shouldn't be constructed for pulling off "shows" or worrying about sounding perfect, or being the star. Likely people will be standing around showing off their gear, then a few will get creative and start a groove which will build and those standing around not playing lead can play along at a lower level and get used to playing with a group. Playing in a group vs. playing by yourself does take a slightly different understanding of your role, the vibe, and the back and forth give and take...not to dominate the music with whatever influence or instrument you play. Then those who are clicking along can join in when the mood and time feels right..not by any order. Some might not play lead at all...and be fine with just grooving on the sidelines. I'm sure peeps will want take breaks and hear others play and maybe even try other instruments or just sing along.
Don't overthink this guys...just get together and go by feel.

If it rains, I'm out. Not transporting my speaker cab in the rain.

I think there will be spares. Anyone who likes is welcome to play through my system if they don't feel like bringing theirs.

If I get too crunk or tired (more than likely the ladder cuz at that point i will be up for 24+ hours:rolleyes:thumbdown) I was thinking the same thing. Uhhh not with you of course:x
I'll bring the weed.

You have to come even if you don't bring a cab. :)

:laughing . . . :| . . . :teeth Wouldn't be the first time. :smoking

I was just picturing a jam with a 12-bar blues progression, probably in D, and seeing where it goes. The style would vary through blues, rock, bluegrass, funk, afro-cuban, psychedlic, whatever but with the same simple progression that everyone can follow. Not everyone would play at the same time, though, so we'd be rotating in & out, switching musicians in the middle, keeping the jam going until everyone got to play.

I hope it happens that way. :)

Hm, I used to play drums, but wasn't ever all that great and its been a loooong time. Maybe I'll stop by to check it out and get some pictures :)

it's ok he can just stop by the media center. We'll issue him a temporary day pass and give him the proper ID after we check his cameras

That's too complicated, it'll never work.

This jam is hyped up bigger than an actual concert. I really hope this doesn't intimidate people from showing up and playing. Let's all just have fun and not take ourselves so seriously. :thumbup

I'm looking for a way to transport my cab. I want to bring it but it won't fit in my car

Call a cab? :teeth
