240 lbs dry :wtf

Damn good luck. That thing is gonna be sweet when you're finished. I like my NC30 the way it is...even with its' 18" rear wheel and limited tire choice. It railed at T.Hill and was very predictable with the BT010s.

One day when I get enough bling, I'll get a 17" wheel and get some super sticky DOT tires or slicks. My buddy Mark who had the same setup in AFM dyno'ed his bike at 56HP at the rear wheel at Kyle Racing.

And when I win the Lotto, I'll try to bling it out like Mike Lohmyer's 444 cc Superbike.

But for now it's gonna stay stock till my skills can outride the bike. My suspension was the best upgrade for the money. Engine mods can wait.

You are absolutely right. Weight reduction = horsepower. Suspension = horsepower. Save the motor for last. Reliability is important. I just bought a set of gearbox internals for $25.00 on ebay (almost brand new) and I am dreading what happens when I install them after my DIY lightening job. As it is now the hawk is in the 54hp range, and I am aiming for 65 then I call it quits. If I actually accomplish my weight reduction goals (which I won't. Realistically I can expect 300 dry). that would equal (i think) (ok lemme do some figuring here)......at 300lbs dry....oh who cares.

so whos ot a salvage title hawk or knows of the whereabouts of one i can score for a 30pack of bud ice?

i may jump on that. i just hate not buying something local.

yeah considering it is going for less than the shock and subframe at this point, who cares if it even runs.

TRUE. lately i just have an itch to not even ride but to create or some quasi lateral definition of that.

when you guys posted that thread converting the hawk into the rc31 or whatever it inspired tinkerlust within me. :love

i dunno :teeth

Have you ridden one yet?

If not, as soon as mine runs again, you are more than welcome to come up and get infected.

They are tiny, fun, and easy as pie to work on, hence the tinkering. Alot of people don't realize it, but the thing that makes the hawk so much fun is the frame. it doesnt matter what the hell else you do, as long as the frame and swinger are there, it will turn fast and be lots of fun.

Sooooo, true. I've been on the do-nothing-to-the-motor-until-it-grenades resistance plan for a loooong time. My basic problem is threefold: No private garage, lack of tools/experience and it's a daily driver. Until I buy a second bike, my plan is to keep it cheap, some more carb/intake work, adjust the suspension 'just so' and keep it with in a sense of street legalty. Reading these posts makes that a little more difficult.....

Stillart, Herp's right. The only way to do the Hawk thing is get one cheap. While I like the resale values, I can't imagine paying top dollar for a stock one.

herpantes: You going for 240 pounds with a battery? It's not going to remain a daily driver is it? You doing the motor work yourself? You've obviously seen the photo pages of Steve Beatty's site.

Logan: I'm limited at Laguna by my Muzzy also. Plus, without a truck I gotta ride. And it's the most expensive track. I'm trying to do the dp school in nov or the zoom zoom at Sears soon. just gotta free up the cabbage....

Rode mine into work today. Still really loud. Probably woke everyone up there along the twin peaks road :laughing oops

I was told i could keep it at a reasonable level in Hawkland.....

You need my tailsection and subframe. And I am doing most of ALL the work myself. Have to do something other than postwhore while my shoulder is knackered. Heres how you do it.

Budget. I have a budget of funds that go towards the bike every week, depending on overtime, prevailing wages, etc.

I no longer go out to eat, and my wife makes bread, and we only buy food on mega-sale, then make a meal plan out of that. This frees up money for tools. I buy each addition to my tool-arsenal as I need it. We buy clothes for the kid on ebay, or barter via craigslist. Also, a definite plus to the shadetree motorcycle engineer arsenal is cloth diapers. Those pampers are way too expensive. Get your wife/girl a diaphragm. Saves money on BC pills and condoms.

I also only eat one meal a day. Dinner. I dont buy lunch at work, nor do I pack one. I simply go without. I keep a wad of old chain-funk on my desk to sniff when I get hungry.

EBAY EBAY EBAY. I just came away with $900.00 in hawk loot for like $150.00. I am getting my 748 front end for about $80.

This stuff is doable. This is my boot camp for racing. Cheapness, courage, sacrifice. It will all be worth it in the end. And the hawk may stay a daily driver. Dad is looking into providing me with the (the one in classifieds) or a different priller rs250 for a trackbike.

I am still going to go through with my plans, daily driver, or track retiree. :cool

duc 748 front end vs the r6? Steve Austin style? lighter stronger faster etc? I'd assume better brakes, lighter front wheel? $80 is cheaper than I got my f2 for .:twofinger

I do want your tail/subframe. However, it' not in my budget-the Muzzy sucked that dry this month. If you told me it's an easy deal to do battery box etc and I've got cash in the next month AND you've not sold it....well, I was a sucker born last minute.

We definetly need to go for a ride/trackday when you get better. I'd like to check out everyone else's hawks for some ideas too.

supposedly at work here....

I'd like to go for a ride this weekend with anyone in San Francisco who's down. My hawk's not as wild as all the stuff you guys are talkin about, but it's very well balanced and a solid ride.
I've been looking at a rear shock for a while too - seems a lot of guys run the Fox TC - pretty shooth eh? Does anyone here have the CBR 900RR conversion? How does the penske stack up??
I love hawk owners - there is nothing to crazy to hack together on one of these frames!!

Redtail:
If I don't go to LA (depends on the fires.) and I get my new mufler, I can go for a ride.

As far as shocks go, forget the 900rr conversion. I tried it and it's not worth the trouble. If you are not going to race, imo, get a Fox; basically the same adjustability as the ohlins/penske, but less cost. Make sure you get the right weight spring for your weight with gear on when you purchase it. I bought mine from cycletech, jd hord's website and am happy with it. Raise your rear up and lower the forks a bit and the bike will turn much nicer....

I second that. Do not bother with the 900RR. I was exalted the day i ripped mine off and got a Fox. I wouldnt bother with the Ohlins (GASP!). If you are riding on the street, get a Fox from cycletech.net. best price around and he will order it with the correct spring. If you are going to race, get a Penske.

Oh. Check this out guys. Guess what i got tonight??.............................

.....A MIG WELDER!!!!!! Now I just have to learn how to use it. Aluminum fairing stays here I come.

Damn I keep turning around and this thread keeps growing and growing. Dude that hawk with the R1 front end....damn sexy. Hmmmm I do own a R1...........
